  • Results of my first real PT using shuriken

At the point I am now with my Ninja I could take many routes with equipment. So i chose the less travled path and decided to make a accurate melee/throw nin. In my pt yesterday in gustav I had BRD sing hunters prelude for me to increase my ranged acc, after that I semi-spammed my Lvl 48 stars. After a few landed I figured my average was about 100-130 with the occasional 170 critical. Now that was nice and all, but after the prelude wore off i decided to try throw without the added help from the BRD. I went from 90% hit rate to about 50%, I wasnt soooo pissed b/c I really didnt have any ranged acc up equip(just LOADS of AGI..+18). This has got me to rethink my gear set up lol...people who are not NIN dont really know the boredom of mindless tanking, YES i say mindless b/c the better you become at it the easier it is , you litteraly have dozens of strat for each mob and you put them to use at the blink of an eye. So..tankin= not hard....what do you do with your excess time...melee,cycle ninjutsu,...gasp....throw stars -.-. I decided that after looking at my ninja's future choice in equipment i would specialize in acc and rng acc. And the pt i had yesterday was my first REAL test in a PT environment although the results where good in damage dept...i would like to hit more without depending on a brd.

I do believe Square Enix intended Ninja players to utilize the throwing ability of Ninja... Although most players overlook this trait completely. There is a reason why Ninjas are the only job that have an "A" in throwing skill; and don't forget Ninja AF has Ranged Accuracy, Ranged Attack and AGI attributes. If Shihei money was spent on Shurikens, maybe the Ninja job would take on a whole different role... a more traditional role. My only complaint is leveling up the throwing skill >.< So tedious~

Mitsu, what level is your throwing skill?

    CLOAK : THF ~ 75 | NIN ~ 53 | SAM ~ 41 | WAR ~ 26 | MNK ~ 20 |

My throw is capped at 207. My advice is to cap your throw NOW, b4 any other pt get it as close to cap as possible. Then once in pt try to get use to using throw, soon youll get a rythm that will allow for minimal interuptions in your attacks with katanas. To cap throw try to get a Junior Musketeer Chakram, it will help alot

Sniper rings are your friend for cutting down misses,
a macro to swap to agi or phalanx rings depending on level if you get caught with shadows down is a good idea though

Hehe...your gonna laugh when you read what im about to say. My gear i had was as follows: (only listing rng acc/acc gear)
          Spectacles (borrowed from a friend)
          2 sniper rings
AF gloves throw skill +5 Rng atk + 20
          AF pants RNG acc+10
          Amemet Mantle
Now...lets begin the pain...in my pt when BRD gave me hunters I hit quite often with my Shriken (not as much as i liked to)..with the gear listed above, and with NO song i had a hit rate of about 50% with my stars. Which in turn really pissed me off. So now im waiting till I can wwear my JSE b/c +10 increase in throw skill is alot and should help. BTW STR helps with your thrown damage alot as well.
So now all that equip minus the spectacles are in ah ready to fund my guilding once again. IMO Snippers are over priced and over rated..get 2 and try them out youll see. The only reason I would want them in the future is BC i want both acc and RNG acc

What were you throwing stars at by the way?
I am just wondering if they were 'low' Incredibly tough or the kind of incredibly tough monster that remains 'IT' for a few levels more ( totetote++) - like stuff that gives you 250+ xp on xp chain #1 - i've seen even rangers have bad hit rates on this tough of a monster.
It seems like stars dont connect well or even do as much damage to certain monster type, sort of like the problem with DRG spears hitting bones. Again I don't have enough proof on this yet myself.

You are 60ish where I have heard many people crying over the insane difficulty of hitting certain monster even with melee and having +30 acc gear on (like peryton monster).
Maybe hitting xp monster with stars is more pronounced at higher level, sort of like ranger trying to hit HNM with ranged

I like sniper ring still (borrowing some while i farm to get my own pair), there isn't much else for me to go after in terms of equipment besides a peacock charm(or spectacle)/AF or the rare+ex katanas from NM. Sniper ring just seems to me like 'required gear' if you are serious about throwing attack - or maybe I am trying to hard at having the best gear to be best ninja possible in both melee and ranged attack .

Personally I notice the difference with snipers, because I really hate missing melee/range attack and I participate in the skillchain. Every miss with shuriken I see as money thrown away with no return (damage) so I see rings as a way to save me gil in the the long run after many levels of throwing have past (and skillup faster due to less misses because I have slacked lately on throw the past 4 levels ).

I tend to throw more ranged stars at the monster the last level before I move to new hunting ground, because I miss alot less and feel like I get my moneys worth on stars if I decide to throw them nonstop. I see stars mainly as a way to supplement damage to make sure you hit chain5 and hold hate, like spamming Ni elementals. Sometimes they arent needed as much.

Hmm. Not sure how well this would work at higher levels (what rings do you normally wear in battle?), but for ranged, I just have a macro that /equips to the standard RACC rings (Bone +1 and so on), /ra <t>, then /equip back to my normal rings. Melee ACC down doesn't matter when you're stuck in throwing animation, anyway.

The Mobs where tote-totetote giving 150-250 exp..we where fighting gobs and raps in Kuftal. As I said without the help of a BRD song my THROW MISSED alot, not my melee atk. As for HNM , heh, we fought and killed a few and Ill tell ya, even a rng with +53 rng acc AND the help of Hunters song missed 90% of his Range attacks against Sim/Roc. As far as the other rings for range acc, I dont want any parts fo em BC of the decrease in melee acc. Your gonna need a rythm for throwing and not spam them. Even though you can make a macro for thow and switch back to equip, your seriously gonna run into inventory space problems.

lol yes 2 inventory slots for Rings(4 if youhave melee acc rings),lets not forget the common 3-5 stacks of shihei. Also the 6-7+ stacks of various ninjutsu you use for buff/debuff/en feeble and lastly at LEAST 3 stacks of stars all that added up = no loot for ninja. So 2-3 inventory spaces is alot in that sense lol. Mind you, you still have 10 spaces that are taken up by equip. (6-7 stacks for buff/debuff/en feeble is BARE minimum BTW^^)

I have a 61 rng right now and i've also have been thinkn about a throwing nin from lv 37+ later on when im done with rng. Atm i cant afford to lv both rng and a throwing nin at the same time.

Your problem is that you used a war subjob. If u want to hit anything at the lv range with ranged attack you gona need a rng subjob for the passive ranged accuracy. rng as subjob will give u +20 accuracy at rng lv 10 and 30. also sharpshot is a plus. Another thing is that u should get the scorpion +1 rings and forget about the melee accuracy for those slots. Rng passive accuracy works for both melee and ranged. so with +20 accuracy from rng and -12 accuracy from the scorpion rings you still get +8 melee accuracy. You might want to equip archer knives in off hand or even both hands if you feel you're still not hitting enough.

Of course you gona lose provoke by doing this but its not all that bad because if you spam ur throws at delay of 190 or was it 192.. you gona generate more hate than a provoke. Only during the beggining is when you dont have much hate but i guess thats whats a thf is for an others not to be a retard.

If you're already hitting with 90% with a war sub and prelude then you dont need so sub rng and would save u some money but without a brd rng is the way to go.

Anyways hope this helps. And let me know how it would work out as I'm not able to test this out atm.

no throwing special...one reason why people dont throw, ninja needs threefold throwing attack
try throwing hawkeye (or other dart things) u can go thro 200 in an hour easily

They really should have a throwing WS for Ninja. That would make Ninja something different to do than just being a tank.
It would be kinda similar to Ranger though.
