  • Equipment Early On....

Hi guys, im currently a new Monk. I level WAR/THF to 30/15...opened up like 5 advanced jobs. Didn't like any, read about MNK and went..."I want to be a MNK!".

So here I am, 14/7 MNK/WAR. Im trying to find out what Equipment I should be looking towards with the next 10 levels.

    I currently have...

Weapon: Strike Bag(dunno how to spell it. lvl. 14 +dex)
    Head: Monk's Headgear
    Body: Power Gi
    Hands: Battle Gloves
    Rings: 2 Balance Rings
Waist: White Belt (Have my Warrior's Belt+1 ready for lvl. 15)
Legs: Kyahan (lvl. 8, didn't see anything else.)
    Feet: Light Soleas (+3 evasion)

I know I need to get something on my Back and probably neck. I have a Dhalmels Mantle +1 for lvl. 18. Was thinking about doing the Wind Pendent Quest, I heard AGI helps MNKs. But im not sure what else to put there.

Stuff that I have from level other jobs...Spike Necklace, 2 Beetle Earings +1, Merc Captians Belt.

So, from level 14 to say 30. What stuff should I be upgrading to?? Thanks in advance

I would say that MNK's most important things to look for in order are:

    +STR
    +Attack
    +Accuracy
    +DEX
    +VIT
    +Evasion

Until level 40ish you wont be able to do much about many of these stats, but do the best you can. Make sure you pick up the Purple Belt at 18, and you can use either +STR or +DEX rings. The STR rings will make you not suck on crabs and other enemies like that, so I prefer them.

Strike Bragnaraks or Bastokian Kunckles pretty much last right up to the level 32 Knuckles beleive it or not (the name escapes me at the moment).

The Battle Gloves last right up to 34 and Ouchido's Kote, so they were a good buy.

Other than that there isn't a lot of variety in MNK gear till the 40 range.

Im Elvaan, so im a little worried i'd miss alot going w/ the STR rings. I do have 2 Courage Rings. Should bring them along when leveling and if I miss too much, switch back to Balance? Will definitely pick up my Purple Belt.

I'm Elvaan as well and I have never had trouble hitting things with +STR rings instead of +DEX.
(As MNK anyway.....other melee jobs you need the DEX and Acc).

Cool, i'll go pick up my Courage Rings tonight and try them out without the DEX rings and see what I can do. I can handle T/VT Snippers. But when they pulled IT ones and they put that Scissor Guard up. I couldn't do any damage at all. 0-0-0-0-0-0-0, COMBO: 0. lol

So yeah, STR Might be good. Battle Gloves are +3 ACC, So that shouldn't be bad.

As much as you hear about Elvann having awful ability to connect hits, it's not really all that bad,It might be after 40 or 50, but as it is, I don't notice that I have a huge lacking in ability to hit.
There is only a slight difference in the actual output from a mithra vs an elvann, and I personally think that the races are fairly well balanced as far as stats go.

Red pretty much covered all the gear you will need. Ouchido's is a great buy, so I suggest getting set on equipment and start saving up for it. It's not nescecarry, but if you ever plan on a SAM then it's an even greater buy. I wouldn't lose any sleep over obtaining it though, its not a make or break item.

Again, I don't know how your server is, but on Pande, the player (NA at least) population is not really "optimized" that is: not using food, not having fully leveled subs, not alwasy current equipment. So you could probably get away with a few gaps in equipment if you can't afford it. I personally try to do the best I can in having all the best stuff, just so I know that I am keeping up the slack.

with your war/thf you can farm now, off an on, as you need a break from lvling monk. . . a good spot that i used to go to alot is Ranperre's tomb, there is alot to do there to make money (travlers mantle, martial slacks, battle gloves in chest, etc) . . .
or if you want to lvl war up just a few more levels farm tiger fangs in jugner forest . .

As a monk didn't really have problems hitting stuff till after 60, unless u count beetles with rhino guard w/o a dispeller. ;p

You're a Hume though. Us Elvaans miss alot. But, I did test it last night w/ Courage Rings instead of Balance, and I was wreckin' things...lol

I'm really loving Monk, wish I would have leveled it early on. At 16/8 now, Hopefully grind to 20 by tomorrow night and then get over to Jeuno. I miss Ru'Lude Gardens.

Brennon, something in the tomb drops the Traveler's Mantle? They sell for 20k in Windurst....I also plan to do the Aspir quest soon and sell that. I don't plan on leveling DRK up anymore. I need to go check the price history on the Kote for my server.

Yes, the Spook which spawns 2-3 times a night right by the tombstone drops the travlers mantle. It doesn't drop very often, but often enough to make hunting it worth it, I think. It's usually got about a couple people camping it, but with 2-3 spawns every night, you get it often enough. Just have a fast trigger finger for provoke ^^

Only thing that sucks about the spook to me, is the days you get there, and noone is there. You sit down, can relax and not have to spam buttons, only to stay there and have no drops in 3 hours =\ I have had nothing but crappy luck with the lower Ranperre's tomb NMs.
