i was told to start as a monk because their starting gear is worth like 1k. then sell the white belt or whatever, and change my job into wht. i just wana see if this is true and i can make a lil extra starting money.

the white belt is worth like, 50-100 gil if that's what your asking. that's all you get when you start as a monk. -

Yes, that is correct.
However, Monks need less in the way of equipment until they get to around lvl 10-15.
I think I was using just bare fists until about lvl 16, before it started to make a real difference, and my armour consisted of just: lvl 1 Robes, and lvl 1 Slops.
Though, their gear gets very expensive at later levels. Just the purple belt alone set me back 11,000, and that's a lvl 18 item. Ochiudo's Kote costs a painful 350,000 G on my server, and I understand that is rather cheap for that item.
On the flip side, I've been holding onto any spells that I've picked up, so when I've been working on my Mage jobs, I've only needed to actually buy very few spells.
Oh, and if you do buy magic, price shop. On Siren, Cure I goes for 500 in the San d'Oria AH, and Stone is just as expensive. Considering the local NPC magic shop sells them for just 50 gil apeice, there is some major price gouging going on in the lower levels.
