Im new to the game and I'm trying to find out what job I want to be, and monk is one of my choices which i am debating. I am wondering if some of you fellow monks can maybe lend as much information about monks as you can to try to influence my decision. Thanks a bunch.

Well, I'd like to first of all say that the job you start with is not terribly important, as you can make a quick trip back to your Mog house and switch jobs free of penalty whenever you feel like.
As far as monk goes, I think it's at least a good job to start out with. You're given a generous spread of HP, and at least for the first several levels you can go without any weapons and still do pretty well. Especially at lower levels (1-10) where group action is low to nil with the exception of the odd duo or trio you want to be able to rely on yourself.
As you gain in levels, you'll notice an ever-widening gap between the armor available for Monks and that for "heavier" melee jobs, but as you're getting a feel for the game you're probably better off survivability-wise as a monk for the higher HP, even though you'll eventually have to admit that platemail beats a kimono in the defense department. :p You'll definitely be a "damage dealer", and though probably not of the magnitude of a DRK, RNG, or BLM, you won't have the crappy HP and defense of the RNG or BLM, and you won't sabotage your defense to boost attack like the DRK often does, so you will be more self-sufficient.
All in all, the MNK has a nice mix of offensive abilities and defensive abilities that make it a versatile and easy-to use class. I would HIGHLY reccomend it for anyone who's just starting and leaning towards any kind of melee job, if nothing else as a good way to learn the ropes.Have your Elvaan spayed or neutered.

Wait a sec, you're saying a Monk doesn't do as much dmg as a DRK? Are you sure? Most people say otherwise, espescially at Raging Fists.

I said *probably*. To be honest, it depends on a lot of things- equipment, food, the monster you're fighting, the level you're fighting at, and probably half a dozen other factors as well, and even once you take all of that into account, people won't agree anyhow.
It does kind of seem that a DRK *should* be able to out-damage a MNK if the DRK really wanted to- it has all the self-immolating attack bonuses that a masochist could wish for.
But hey, any way you slice it you give hits and don't take them- luck and circumstance will weigh heavily in deciding "whose is bigger".Have your Elvaan spayed or neutered.
