I just got it yesterday and my biggest problem was finding info about how to obtain it and how much was needed for the NM so here is a little guide on how to obtain it.
First you need to be lvl 71+ and have at least 240 in Polearm skill.
When you reached those requerments you need to talk to Balasiel (the Paladin quest NPC) in Southern Sandoria.
He will give you Spear of Trials and tell you to drain all of its power and return to him.
Most people know how to do this at this lvl but I will tell you anyway. What you need to do is get 300 Weapon Points (WP. You get them by doing weapon skills and skillchains on Easy Prey or harder enemies. You get 1 WP by doing a solo weapon skill. ending a lvl 1 WS will give you 2 WP, ending a lvl 2(distortion or fusion) will give you 3 WP and ending a lvl 3(Light or Darkness) will give you 5 points.
The fastest way to get this part done is to get a THF, MNK or DRK who also need their WS and take turns ending light SC.
When you got 300 points the latent effect wil dissapear, you can see it on your water and dark elements under your equipment on the equipment screen. The text will still be on the weapon but you will not see the effect anymore.
Now that its gone return to Balasiel and trade the weapon to him and you'll get a key item called Map to the Annals of the Truth or something in that way. It tells you to go to Sea Serpent Grotto.
Before you get an alliance there for the NM I recommend that you do the quest for a Sahagin key so you can pass the Ornamented door.
Sahagin key quest:
Before you go you'll need some items.
1 Gold beastcoin, 1 silver beastcoin, 3 mythril beastcoin, 1 Norg shell and silent oils or sneak.
When you got then you have to locate the Gold door. To find it just go left all the way from yuhtunga jungle entrance till you see Ornamented door, then go left again and you'll get out in a big room.
Now walk right across the room and pass under the bridge and youll get to a door. Check it many time till it says something about gold shimmering, if not then you are at wrong door so go back and try another.
Now trade the gold beastcoin here. once inside everything will be EP and aggro so keep sneak up but no need to invis. Im not sure of the way here but I think its just to go left all the way till you see a door. Open it and you will be in a big room, this is the room Charobdys(SP?) spawn in so be careful. At the end of the room as a NPC sahagin talk to him and go back to the gold door (DONT ESCAPE you have to do it over if you zone now). When out of the gold door again hug the right wall undtil you find another door examine it ans it says something about silver, so trade the silver beastcoin. Now just follow the path and jump down to the right when you can and keep following. You will end up in the Utsusemi room. In the back is another Sahagin NPC talk to him and trade the Mythril beastcoin + Norg shell and he give you the Sahagin key.
Now that that part is done. Gather all your high lvl friends. and go to Sea Serpent Grotto again.
Trade the sahagin key to the Ornamented door when all is ready to run in, you cant open it from inside so make sure all get in.
Now pass the bridge and the ??? is in the next room.
I did it with a small alliance of 9 lvl 68-75 and it was overkill. The NM is easy but have high evasion. I'm sure a normal exp pt at 71-72 could take it down. No one of us were even near death. Skewdriver did 500 on 75 PLD in full adaman but nothing else that could be considered dangerous.
After you beat the NM check the ??? again to get Annals of Truth and you are done here. So go back to Balasiel again and you will learn Impulse Drive. Now go out and have fun with it
