Lock picking for AF coffers?? (DRG related)

I've been having a really difficult time getting a Quicksand Caves coffer key for some bizarre reason. I managed not get one in all the leveling I did there and now the mobs are too weak for an xp party so getting a group to go there with me has been tough.

A PLD friend of mine went with me and we duo'd there for hours with no key drops. I then got a few kind-hearted high level JP players to help me for a few hours more and still no key.

What I'm wondering now is... would it be possible to go there with my lvl 36 THF and pick the coffer open with skelly keys? First of all - if I changed to THF would I even get the DRG AF boots if i successfully picked the coffer? Secondly what are my chances of actually getting the coffer open as lvl 36 THF?

Any insight into this would be appreciated...

Yes as a thief you can pick a coffer for another job. As long as the quest is active.

At 36 I'm not sure if you'd be able to do it. You'd probably have a good chance of getting a mimic. If you have the friends to clear the area and take down a mimic, you should consider trying it. If you fail too much though, you might have to level up your thief some more.

I was told that you had to open coffers with the job that needed the AF in order to recieve it =o I havent tested it out, but it would make sense if you have AF quests (coffer) for multiple jobs, since both quests would be active.

You must be in the job for the AF you are trying to receive. You cannot pick the coffer as a lv.36 THF (really at all... but that's a topic for the THF forum) and receive your DRG AF.

For your AF Coffers that are non-quested (i.e., open coffer, get AF piece, nothing else), your main job must be the job you want to get AF for.

Now ... I've heard from various people here and there that some 'quest' coffers can be opened by any job. The most detailed rumour (and I say rumour, because I haven't seen it proven, nor do I have the interest to level up a job to 50 just to do so) I've heard is that you can open your dark spark coffer with any job. This kinda makes sense, because you can only have the dark spark quest active for one job at any given time. Anyone care to agree/disagree/call me a big fat liar?
