  • Dragoon and Sword?

Im lvling up as a THF (obviously to become DRG/THF). However, i use swords and as most know a THF cannot use a polearm of any sort. Thus, once i reach DRG i will have a high lvl in sword combat, yet 0 in pole.

Dragoons are masters of the spear, however, is it necessary? Would a Dragoon with a sword fair well, or are there no decent swords for a DRG to use?

I'd really like not to have to start at 0 again if it can be avoided....what're the options?

Hmm ive been leveling on sword recently and i have to say, what ever your weapon affects the damage you incur with JUMP ability. Yep you have to use spear..

Its not bad really, you get tp back from Double Thrust WS, your strongest WS for awhile and its not as expensive as buying swords.. (well, not for awhile)

It will cap in no time, no worries. Drgs aren't too handy with a sword though, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Actually I would suggest trying to cap sword and staff for goon... .It will be usefull... later on if your pt decided to fight bone and you need to use staf... also spirit within is really good alter on if you are hunting NM that has great resistance..... or not to give them alot of tp with multi hit ws....

As mentioned Sword has fairly limited use to a DRG. Basically for Spirits Within and thats about it. While its suggested you skill staff up, if you aren't fighting bones its a big damage gimp and the WS are terrible, and likely no pick up party is going to let you spend the time skilling up staff. Honestly at this point I don't really regret not keeping staff maxed as I simply never fight bones anyway, and the only WS I would hope would make it worthwhile is Retribution..which needless to say I haven't heard anything good or bad about it and not available to DRG until 73. If Retribution is completely awful...I can't say I would see the reason to use it. Granted its better damage to use a staff than Polearm vs bones, but if you can't make a decent skillchain anyway, you shouldn't be bothering with fighting something that Polearm really can't touch. Considering the B- rank to staff, its questionable whether its worth using even if maxed skill at higher levels. The skill gaps are pretty large, not really worth the effort when you could just go fight something else instead. Same reason why at high levels a SAM using a Polearm is just gimping themselves tremendously for no real benefit. If your party really has to fight bones, find a WAR, DRK or MNK to replace you..it would just serve the party better in the long run.

Just worry about using Polearm. Good time to skill up other weapons is helping peoples' AF coffers/NM fights/genkei 1. Often 60+ people do skill up parties when they can't find people for a standard party set up, or WAR, DRK, or mage skilling up a weapon they have neglected or haven't been able to use in exp parties.

Consider leveling warrior too since you mentioned THF leveling it to be a DRG/THF. WAR sub has significant long term benefits.

                  2 things.

                  1. You shouldnt be using a sword for a theif past what lvl12?
                  2. You have to sub something for theif i.e. War. Use a pole arm then.

                    1. Sword is better until you get Viper Bite (33, I believe).
                    2. You can't use weapons from your subjob.

If your are an unusually wealthy beginning player i would recomend leveling sword and dagger. Use sword as primary until 33 then switch to dagger for viper bite. Sword has better SC versatility because of BB and RLB. Gust Slash is in the absolute worst SC pool for levels 1-33.

However if you are poor, and can only afford to level one weapon i would go dagger. Once you get to 33 people will expect you to have viper bite. SA+TA+VB finishes distortion for 400+ as soon as you learn it. Fast Blade can't compete.

                      Edit:

Then they're stuck at the same impass Lvling a weapon from 0 to max skill.

I know that. They cant go thf27/war1. When they lvl War for theif the war should use the polearm.

                          Summing up:
The only solution is to use Sword as a theif (or any other class) and have a War (or other polearm user) as sub, lvl polearm when lvling sub, and once you reach DRG you won't have to start at 0 skill lvl?

                          Makes sense to me, thanks
