  • Sub Monk?

Lately I have seen more and more DRG/MNK poping up all over the place.

What would be the reasons to sub Monk over Warrior?

I would think of this as a big downgrade, any ideas?

I am also curious about this combo, as I fully plan to go DRG at 30, and right now I am MNK/WAR.

Well the way I see it, MNK is the logical choice? I'm constantly told how it's never a Dragoon's job to tank, and that it is a Dragoon's job to attack and do good damage with his lance and companion... so surely the Monk (a more attack focused class) makes the better compliment to a Dragoon than a Warrior? Isn't the extra emphasis on ATK not DEF preferable? And what use is Provoke is you're in a well rounded party and it's not your job to tank? Double Attack sounds useful, but that's not until later levels, and wouldn't a MNK's Counter Attack with good character stats be almost as useful?

Anyway, I am no expert and I still consider myself very much to be a learner. So, if anyone could respond to the idea of a DRG.MNK, I would be very grateful, it would be a lot less work to sub my MNK at 30, and besides, I kind of grown to like my Monk, I'm not such a fan of the Warrior job ^^ Thanks in advance for any advice!

99% of the time, this is due to people picking monk starting out without knowing what they wanted to be later, or not feeling like leveling up another sub once they get to 30 and unlock an advanced job.

War sub is alot more useful. Saying a monk would be good since you won't be tanking and won't need provoke rather contradicts the benefits of monk sub people like to point out, (counter, added hp, dodge) which are typically only good if you are getting hit alot.

Warrior is actually a much more offensive based sub too. Although monk mains put out really nice dps later on, that is mostly based around h2h related abilities and ws's, which other classes won't be using.

Only real benefit I can see to a MNK sub is that accuracy increasing ability, otherwise warrior is just better.

The only time you should ever sub MNK is if you are a WAR or if you happen to be using H2H.

MNK abilities as a DRG sub:

Counter - useful, but ideally you're not supposed to get hit in the first place.

Dodge - again, useful but ideally you're not supposed to get hit in the first place.

Boost - useful, but Berserk/Meditate/Sneak Attack > Boost anyday.

Additional hp - once again, useful, but you'll probably have more than enough hp already as a DRG/WAR, DRG/SAM, or DRG/THF.

In other words, all DRG/MNK perks are useful, but they are still inferior to what you get from other subjobs.

As someone already stated, the only real reason to sub monk is for Focus. In FFXI accuracy is in high demand, and the accuracy you get from focus is quite nice.
