Alright I plan to be a dragoon once I hit level 35 and get a party to help me with the quest. Anyway my question is what is a good class to be before having it sub for my dragoon. I don't want the Warrior because I dislike being the tank, so any opinions on what I should be? I'm thinking of maybe a WMG or MNK.

Well I started off as a WAR. I'm lvl 9 now and have lvl 22 polearm skill. I would recomend you to start off as a WAR, because that's what I heard was the best way to go. Well that's what I'm doing. Not too sure if monks can use polearms, doubt it, and I'm pretty sure white mages can't either. So you wouldn't be able to lvl up your pole arm ability. But if anything I would say start off with a melee class first, since dragoons are a melee class. Get used t fighting and go back later and lvl white mage as a subjob.

Like I said though I dislike being the tank. Thats why I like the dragoon I can have my Wyvern be my tank. Use super jump get rid of your hate and let your dragoon take the beating. But I guess if I have to be a WAR I'll be the WAR. I could learn to like being the tank. But the brings up another question. Tanks usually pull don't they?

I decided against WAR and choose to go THF, raising your polearm when your not a dragoon is pretty pointless, seens as a dragoon is a gdo with a spear your polearm skills easily caps as you raise levels. I found THF fun, and made getting gil and buying armour easier, but on the whole in terms of finding PTs its pretty easy; treasure hunter means you get party invites as soon as you need from 15-20 while you get the items for sub job quest. Once i got my sub job i went war, became a emergancy tank and all out attack in terms of party position, after that I had made a fair few friends and only had massive trouble finding PT in kazham once, when i ended up messing about with idoit PT leaders... Kazham is a good example of THF usefulness, the keys were alot easier to get even with 4 people hunting with you. The main idea i had was make money, get to 30 and i did and now i'm finally dragoon
Uhm doesnt work like that, unless you miss with your first attack the wyvern will hit first and monster will lock him, but he wont last long, and by the time you have super job i doubt you'll be soloing so the wyvern definitely won't be tanking. Also letting you wyvern get hit is the same as letting yourself get hit, you have to rest, resting means you loose TP, lowing your usefulness in the PT. I may only be Lv 19 but the position of all out attack seems to work best for dragoons, this why your wyvern dont get hit so you don't have to sit and your 10+ PT a hit soon builds up and combined with the wyvern's breathe attack your attacks become the ones taking chunks outta the enemies Health bar...Thats why I like the dragoon I can have my Wyvern be my tank. Use super jump get rid of your hate and let your dragoon take the beating. Thats why I like the dragoon I can have my Wyvern be my tank. Thanks I think I will go with Thief. I do plan on soloin' once I get to be a dragoon. Its not really that hard if it is anything like Everquest. Many said that once you reach high levels it is impossable to go solo, I found it simple. And you can stand while your Wyvern sits. Thank you for helping me, now I have to read about the theif though.

slayer, that was an exploit and nothing more. I dont believe it works anymore.
On topic, I went war because dragoons, while not the main tanks, should be able to if you HAVE to (like, if the main tank is loosing HP and the WHM(s) are running out of MP). Also, berserk and double are useful.
edit: also, for earlier levels this is nice, like at level 10 you will be soloing, so you can use provoke to get monsters off your wyvern

Well it is possable in Everquest for a Mage to go soloing is not hard. (I guess its not soloing really since you have the elementals.) And I guess I will try a warrior and if I can't learn to like Tank-ing before level 30 i'll switch to thief.

You might want to re think the idea of being a Dragoon and go with Summoner or Beast Master. They are the pet classes of Final Fantasy. Dragoons get a wyvern, but they do not accept comands.
They attack when you do, use a breath weapon when you use a weapon skill and sit/get up when you do. They dont have that great of a defense and will die quickly as you can not cure or heal them.
And when they die you have to wait 2 hours from when you last summoned them to re-summon them. Also Dragoons can only solo well up to lvl 15 maybe... after that they (like most melee classes) need a group. Yes it was easy to solo at high levels in Everquest, but this isnt EQ
