  • What makes the best Dark Knight?

    What Race?
    What starting job?

I ask this because I want to make an effective Dark Knight, and I heard that a Warrior/Dark Knight isnt really a good combo. So could someone answer this newbs question?

      my personal view

Dark Knights are excellent in attacking power, but in general, their defence is relatively low, and they are weaker to enemy's attacks. They earn much hate of the enemies, and they are more likely to be the first ones to get killed by the enemies, receiving intensive attacks from them, if execution of healing magics of their party members is late.

People expect warriors to have good defence, because they are more likely to get attacked by enemies. The reason why people say WAR/DRK is not good lies in this fact. This combination will lesson defence ability of worriors.

However, people don't completely deny the value of existance of a Dark Knight in their party, because they are mighty. Especially, Galka Dark Knights are very popular, because their good amount of HP will make them enough to endure intensive attacks to them through the battle. WAR/DRK might not be necessarily bad combination for Galka.

DRK/WAR isn't just good for the defense boost and taunt. WAR was (before exp) the second highest STR job in the game (DRK being first, MNK is third, sorry). Also, war gives Attack Up passive abilities, and a berserk ability that raise attack and lowers defense. Another important fact is the dual-swing passive ability when you hit level 50 DRK (25 sub war). This allows you to every now and then land two hits instead of one... and trust me, you want this to happen. As often as it can, in fact. The new job Samurai has very high attack too (not as high as DRK, but maybe higher than WAR), so maybe it'll replace WAR as the preferred subjob, but until people get results, DRK/WAR is still the most preferable combo (unless your taru, in which case you should sub WHM).

Now for the (high level) summon battles, I hear DRK/RDM is a very good combo, because you can imbue your weapons with elemental attacks which, although they don't do much during normal levelling parties, do a buttload of damage here because the summons that you fight are highly elemental. Also, you can cure3 your PLD, which is always handy. Plus a buttload of MP... XD But other than summon battles, haven't been many reports of people using it.

Keep in mind that your subjob isn't static. You can switch around as you like and see fit. If you don't like a certain sub, train up another. It's not like training up your main. A lot of hardcore people (me not being one of them) can train a job to 30 in a week. The hard part is your dark main. Any sub will train twice as fast. DRK is one of the hardest jobs to level, you know

            hm...

If you want to be a serious offensive threat I think a Taru Taru Dark Knight/Warrior. Becuase Taru Taru are mage masters so you have nothing to worry about but your strenght you do so then you pick Warrior and now you can hit hard with your weapon thats what I think.

              One slight little flaw there

              Taru's strength sucks XD

Serious offensive threat it Taru Black Mage (Int, which is what taru's have, not STR). Very different things.

                Awntawn,
You were DK/TH for awhile right? What are your feelings on this? I'm really into the idea of Mithra DK/TH, with some Agi boosting accessories. I figure if I'm gonna get hate, I'd rather dodge that absorb it (even though these rates can be low, and magic/group attacks will hit). I figure she'll hit hard and frequently, and look like a really cool catwoman with a huge sword!!! But seriously, how is this combo?

Not even the sub job of a Warrior?

Gives it some, but still no where near as good as an elvaan's, or even hume's for that matter.

Comparison Lv. 50 Tarutaru Dark Knight/Warrior vs. Lv. 50 Elvaan Dark Knight/Warrior (Both subjobs are at lv.25, obviously)

                      Race | HP |MP |STR |DEX |VIT|AGI |INT|MND|CHR
                      ------------------------------------------------------------------

                      Tarutaru|728 |365 |51 |49 |45 |49 |56 |32 |36 |

                      Elvaan |950 |161 |63 |46 |51 |40 |41 |41 |36 |

So... You'd be a better mage (+15 INT, +204 MP), but be a much worse fighter (-12 STR, -6 VIT, -9 MND, -222 HP).

In essence, you are an okay mage (with very few spells), and an okay fighter, but your not really good at either of them.

Not really that good of a choice, unless you are planning to make a very unique character.

Taru DRK should sub whm so they can cure. In essence, it becomes a secondary healer who helps with some of the damage. It's a class of it's own, not played the same way as traditional dark knights.

Been discussed before. Someone should make a sticky on the reasons why this combo doesn't work

I would but I'm too lazy XD
