DRK+ sword and shield?

hi guys,

I saw an AF DRK while fighting in korraloka(sp) tunnel. he was armed with a sword and shild insted of the more traditionalscythe or greatsword.

at first i thought "what kinda crack is this guy smoking and where can i get some?" but the more i thought about it the more i liked the idea...

But i will put it to you more experianced DRK out there before i spend gil on somthing useless, is this a fesible combo or am i jsut wasting my time, thnaks

just wasting your time. sword has never been a great weapon for DD, until you get to weapons like ridill(orz). weaponskill wise, you get nothing great until spirits, which is more useful vs HNM's.

Feasible for farming, for XP parties, no.

We have a B- in Sword, which makes it okay to use up to about level 50..

At that point, your max skill in sword is 5 lower then Scythe/GS..

At 60, it's 7 lower..

that's -5 or -7 permanent ACC

So up to 60 I guess it's 'okay' to use it..

Past 60 the skillcaps change.. at 65 It's an 18 skill difference, and at 70, 28 skill..

so -18 acc and -18 atk permeanently.. so past 60 = NONONO!

DRKs get Vorpal Blade (4 hit WS) at 63, which- with the right weapon can do some serious damage. Did you happen to look at what weapon he was using or what level he was? Bloodsword is one of the nicest swords a DRK can use (44 DMG + HP Drain) and does some mean damage with Vorpal Blade. I use mine for farming because it's a relatively fast weapon, heals me occasionally, and does some nice damage with vorpal blade.

If he was playing solo, he might be skilling up his weapon or farming.

I carry a sword and darksteel shield because... um... it looks cool, and that's what counts in this game!

I don't use it on anything that cons higher than even match though.

... what level are you? I know if i try to fight something that is level even match i will die in 4 hits.... I don't really know if your joking or not so varify please .


As far as carrying a sword and a shield it is a stupid idea as everyone else has said my guess the guy was trying to level his parrying skill , sword and shield skill probably for another job. Either that or he was just bored lol. I do stupid stuff from time to time. My personal fav is to go kill earth elements in dunes only with range the sad things in life that make time go by.

umm.. before we go on judging other people without putting any thoughts into it, are you absolutely sure the DRK wasn't in a skill-up pt trying to skill-up his sword?

lol ya, sword + shield = bad on exp mobs.. basically anything higher than decent.

Sword does have it's uses though, for Vorpal Blade. It's just something extra to play around with when tired of scythe/greatsword outside of exp PT. This goes the same for 1h Axe and Rampage.

Rampage is also one of the best WS for Drk in Ballista too ><;

Maybe when lvl 20 or under when doing a lot of exping solo you can use sword/shield if you really wanted too, but IMO you're still going to get hit a lot, and without a scythe/gsword to deal high damage back you eventually will lose out.

If you ever think about doing HNM's you need sword lvled.

Lvl 60. I only use one to raise the skill in skillups, coffer hunts, etc. I can't fight alone on even matches, and never said so... >.>

I use my DRK to do skill ups for other jobs.

I leveled Great Axe to Lv.80 with DRK, so I could use with WAR. I also leveled Axe & Dagger to Lv.100 with DRK/NIN. I'm using Sword for THF until I learn Viper Bite. So I "power leveled" Dagger so I was up to date when the time came. I'm also doing the same thing for Sword, so it's cap'd for my select RDM meleeing. I just need to find out can I level Club with DRK/NIN for RDM as well.

I walked around with a Sword and a Shield as DRK at one point. Just because I thought it looked sweet, and I had the Kite Shield and a Sword on me. Now I don't really have the room for that, so I gave that up... 20 levels ago? lol

Now I need to do a real Skillup with Great Sword. It's WAY behind. Once I have WAR25+, I'll really go do a skillup with Great Sword. I regret having neglected Great Sword. It was just too much of a hassle to cap both Scythe and Great Sword. Especially when Scythe did more basic damage. But Sneak Attack Hard Slash did more then Sneak Attack Slice.

I just skill it so i can get Savage Blade at 75. I mean why should paladin be the only one who gets to look that pimp using a weaponskilll?
