  • Dark Knight quest, to become one itself

No, I'm not asking for how to do it or anything ... I just wanna know what's it like!

I hear all about these neat cutscenes and I saw something about Zeid saying its a lonely path with sorrow and anger or something like that.

I know its an evil job and such, but I wanna hear what it was like to go through it! Screenshots would be cool too..

(trying to decide between Drk and Rng )

This could help a lot ... I love those evil engulfed characters.

    Thanks!

killing 100 tunnel worms with that POS chaos bringer really shines out on my list of most boring video game tasks.

However everything before and after that is buiscuits and gravy. ^^

Do they really talk about the dark side of the job or anything like that?

I think that's the most fun I've had...besides sitting in Jeuno for hours on end waiting for a party playing GTA3.

        Maybe that's why's I'm so damned poor...hm.

The cutscenes don't really say that much.

Yes, it has cut-scenes with Zeid at the begining and end of the Dark Knight quest and one cut-scene with Zeid at the end of the Death Bringer quest. I wasn't into the dialogue that much because I don't see my character as evil, but one quote that stands out in my memory is Zeid saying that the path of a Dark Knight would lead to somthing "greater than righteousness".

Really? Intereseting .. since it always talks about Dark Knights giving themselves over to well ... darkness and all that.

I think the best quote from Zeid is at the end of the AF3 quest. However I play on the Japanese client so I don't know what it says on the English one.

In the Japanese one he tells you not to hold any regrets in regards to your life and your soul, since the Dark Knight knows more than anyone how transient the human soul is. He also says that you should be able to find something more important to you than a cheap concept like 'justice.' And should you ever start to hold doubt in your heart as you follow your path, just turn your eyes to your blade and ask yourself, "Is my blade glowing blackly?"

Yes, it goes into the "darkness" of being a Dark Knight. I like playing that role. I'm a fairly reserved and quite individual in real life so it fits perfectly.

                ***SPOILER BELOW***

Plus, it was Zeid who killed the Shadowlord back in the day before the "Adventurers" time. So, that automatically gives all DRK's in the game +5 to reputation.:p

I've been wrestling with all of this as well. I've been trying my best to figure out what a Dark Knight really is in Final Fantasy XI, story-wise. Are they evil? Apathetic? Neutral? Good? Why do they destory Arcane creatures? I'm a roleplayer and so figuring this out for my character has been one of my main goals. So far, he's mostly an angry man. Recently he tried to move away from that and focus on sorrow and despair, but in the end he feels nothing but jealousy, revenge, anger, hatred, and lust. ...yet, he isn't really an evil guy. Hmm... I think I want to go back into Palborough or something and watch that cut-scene again... I also want to upgrade Chaos Bringer... just for the hell of it.

I just wanted to put in something that might seem out of the blue (or dark, depending on the time of day )

But I think that FFXI (Square-Enix) needs to fix up a few things about "jobs" in the game. There is not enough emphasis on the job development story. I mean in some games, when you encounter a NPC, he/she would respond to the job class that you are... You would be treated differently, you would develop differently, and you would have your own quest as a certain job.

As it is right now (as I know it), you get 1 quest about DRK and some cutscenes about DRK's story... but that's it!! You would think that you would slowly progress in your DRK development with some sort of story, right? For example, when you get Soul Eater, which has a heavely themed name and execution, it would be nice to have a continuation of the "DarK" path which you are progressing in...

Use your imagination for the other job skills. Many of the job skills can be associated with some form of story line (its the writers' job not mine to say what happens).

It is not enough to have a story to get the Dark job and 'tada' you get everything with it if you get the experience points. It should be an ongoing thing! Where is Zeid guy when you get Soul Eater or Last Resort?! Should he not have something to do with these things?

                    BTW:
I am a Monk, and I think these 'story' skills apply to Monks too (we have Chi Blast, Chakra, Focus, dodge, Counterstance). So many skills and we could have a story behind each one... not that we magicaly get a skill when we reach a certain lvl. ...

Anybody see what I am talking about?

Side note: "Souleater" is simply called "Ankoku" (Darkness) in the Japanese version. Cecil had this move in the Japanese version of FFIV; the Dark Knight job in FFX-2 can use it as well. Also, in the JP FFXI "Dark Knight" is "Ankoku Kishi" (literally "Dark Knight")

I agree about there being more job development. Dark Knight would especially be interesting.

Is there some kind of place you can go to suggest this to SE teams?

Btw, I loved that "is your blade going blackly" part hehh
