DRK/SAM in the dumps?

  • DRK/SAM in the dumps?

    I just want to see if it'll still be worth it to even bother with DRK/SAM or if I should just give up the thought now. I've been hearing rumors it blows, but I'm still not quite sure why it would. Could somebody give me some info on this?

    If you have no restraint and guillotine every time you get 100% tp, then it could be bad.

    the main arguement against it is that willy nilly SC's will do too much damage. /war's also safer with defender, or as a super emergency tank provoke

      With Samurai as Subjob, you only get 60 percent TP back with meditate every 3 (or is it 5?) minutes. There are far more advantages to going with Theif or Warrior. Hell, you could probably get just as much of a TP bonus with /War because of double attack...

        i've heard alot of rumors... but it's from people i trust, and MOST of them say it blows chunks... i don't want to get another job to 30+, if u want to, do it for fun...

          One way I can see it being useful is when you're helping people on AF's or quest help in general where you're going to be the main high level tank fighting something. Mainly where hate isn't a problem since you'll have it anyway...

            honestly... i don't see why /sam would even gain that much hate. sure if you have 100tp in the begining of the fight and spam guilloitne within the first minute 15seconds of the fight, but with the 3min interval....or whatever interval it is... i can't really compare it to penta, because i never seen guillotine on an IT monster... but if its as shitty as penta(drg's seem to think this is godly)... i don't really see the massive hate.

              Med is 3 minutes.

              As was said compared to SAMs 140 (with af) med, 60 just isnt gona be worth it.

              With /sam you get the following.

              60% every 3 minutes
              TP store 1 and 2. Granted the first two make the biggest noticable differance.. but...

              Thats about it

              You wouldnt even want to start a fight with med, thats a stupid idea.

              Really what you would do is this. As the mobs getting close to dead after youv all skillchained and whatnot, you med and just about then the paladin will have worked his slow ass up to 100tp, then you could renkei with him so he doesnt waste all his tp becaus theres no RDM and he needs to sit down.

              You loose tomuch for 60% tp every 3 minutes and about 1-2% more tp a hit.

              /sam is overhyped

                Alright, now I get it. Well, I don't think I'll completely forget about /sam, but I'll be going /war for now. I might lvl my sam for fun anyway, so having it as a backup sub wouldn't hurt for solo'ing and gil farming. Thanks everybody for the help, and if there's any more info you can post it'd be appreciated.

                  if its every 3m 60tp back
                  then why in the hell sub sam?

                  you get 2 double attack every 1m~
                  thats more 6 hit every 3m
                  thats 78% tp back

                  cuz if its every 3m no one will sub sam lol

                    Med is every 3 minutes. Yes the Official Strategy Guide says its 1, they are wrong.

                    There really is no good reason to sub sam, people do it purley becaus someone else told them that it was 'amazeing', and they dont bother thinking (that would be to hard for the average player i suppose) so they /sam and suck.

                    The net return on /war is somuch better. sam is not a subjob. People dont realise how well a sam can work at high levels, mostly becaus people dont realise how effective MB is. Melee damage, even from a rich ranger, is nowhere near what a BLM is capable of doing when the melees stop trying to outdamage eachother and instead cooperate and renkei so the mage can kill it. Sam are wonderful for this, a sam gives a party a ton of renkei flexability.

                    But as i said, most melees think its their job to kill things so they dont realise that personal damage doesnt matter, the partys damage output does. Becaus of this most people dont like SAM/, and becaus of that they try to sub it, becaus they envy their tp gaining powers, but dont realise that med alone is not what does it.

                    A sam/ gets lots of tp becaus

                    1. Great katana
                    2. dubble hit with /war
                    3. med
                    4. tp store

                    a /sam will only have some tp store, no dubble hit, and a weaker med.

                    So leave med to the sam/ you are better off subbing war. It will make you better, it will make your party better, everyones better.

                      /sam blows. selfish job combo does nothing but slowing down the PT. its fun for a bit but in PT /war > /sam for dmg, /thf > /sam for usefulnes. thats about where im getting at. test it yourself you'll see.

                      dmg. /war > /sam > /thf
                      useful. /thf > /war > /sam

                        maybe i am wrong i just turned drk a week ago or so, but

                          THF is niiiiiiice after 60

                          I just switched my profile from DRK/WAR to DRK/THF because I got my THF up to date, and it's really the combo that I foresee that I use the most from now on.

                          PT love it. Got into a JP party this weekend. 1 NIN/WAR tank, 1 DRK/THF (me), 1 DRG/WAR, 1 RDM, 1WHM, 1BLM. Went to Kufdal tunnel lower to fight raptors (took a break from leveling my SAM sub).

                          Real guillotine happiness. the DRG and teh NIN renkei. I'm in charge of controling the hate and dish damage. I just opened up with tricked guillotine onto the tank at ever battle, Love it! Only drew hate once, and that's when I missed a TA+guillotine by a hair. LOL. It was great fun, clock work. Too bad I had to hit the sack by 3 a.m.... :sweat:

                            Sam sub for war "Is" overrate for a exp party... Like others have stated, you simply lose too much with sam sub and the gain isnt worth it. Surely it does more damage if you get to spam WS but it will just make a mess with bad hate controll, curing senseless drk in a pt is the same as flushing mp down the toilet. Simply put, it doesnt work very well in exp pt.

                            Sam sub however is very useful in BCNM runs. There will be times in a bcnm battle (bcnm 60, 70 ) where you need to finish a mob quickly regardless of the hate. So if you have a sam sub it is very useful in this situation, altought you lose the ability to provoke, if you are doing the bcnm with a knowledgable pt then it really shouldnt be a problem. ( Drk provoking is always used in emergencies..always)

                              In my experience, I've never seen a DRK/THF compete with a DRK/WAR in terms of raw damage power

                              The /THF is only useful for his fuidama capabilities, WHICH can be replaced by simply getting a THF with viper bite to fuidama onto the tank

                              DRK/THF cannot compete with berserk + last resort + double strike
