I just became a lvl 43 DRK and was going to attempt the AF1 for the Raven Scythe, so i asked a friend to help me out. I went to the galka in Bastok and got the quest, said he needed a Darksteel Formula. Then i go to Windurst and talk to the taru at the library Cochal-Monchal but he tells me nothing about killing the NM at Giddeus. He only says something about being confused about something. Does something need to be done before he will tell me to kill the NM? Will certainly appreciate any help given on this.

Make sure its the Galka in Dark Steel Forge (not in Cid's lab) you talk to..
The taru would tell you something about a yaguda stole the formula, then you're set. -
Yah, this messed me up too.
You need to talk to 2 different galka before to talk to Cochal-Monchal.
1.) The first is in Cid's lab, talk to him to get the AF1 quest.
2.) Go to Darksteel Forge (same place, just down one floor) and then talk to another Galka to hear more about the lost formula.
3.) Go to Windhurst and talk to Cochal-Monchal and you should get him to say something about the book being stolen by a NM Yaguado, at which point you can go out to giddeus with your Yaguado Cherry and trade it to the ??? and fight.
4.) Bring back the formula to the Galka in Cid's lab to get AF1.
