    Here are the details:
    I am in a small linkshell made up of people that have played mmorpg's together for 4+ years and are powergamers. Only 7 people are in the ls atm (upper 30's), and it's a good day when they are all on. The problem is that we lost our pld.
    That leaves us with a rdm/whm, blm/whm, drg/war, drk/war(me) as the usual 4, with whm/thf/mnk thrown in sometimes.
    Now this setup would have been ok with a pld as the 5th member, but now the drg is our new tank. That really leaves me the odd man out since a drk is a late bloomer that contributes less than those other classes until later in the game and is about as high maintenance a char as I've ever seen.

    These are the issues I see:
    1) Drg is not a real tank (ok, got that out of the way, heh)
    2) See #1
    3) Even if drg can hold aggro off me if I use Berserk (since SE was nice enough to give drg their defining ws at 49), I can pretty much cross off ever using Last Resort or Souleater for anything but ws charging and, even then, aggro is gonna be dicey.
    4) Drg might suck so bad that I end up having to tank instead. Which means losing all that nice +dex and +accur gear and becoming a 2h warrior that will stir up elementals with the windstorms my misses will create.

    Now I think a drk would be a complete waste in the environment I see myself ending up in. A drk's damage means nothing if they don't have the freedom to use it.

    So I am, most likely, going to switch classes. These are my considerations:
    1) Pld/war (1h): No need to go into details on this one, other than to say that our concern is losing too much dmg since we are lucky to have a full group on at once. So the question is: Will the ability to have the best tanking ability/aggro control in the game (no rich ninjas here) more than offset the longer fight times from the loss of drk/war dmg?
    2) Pld/war (2h): No hissing please. This would be based on our desire to have better tank/control aggro than a drg can give us, but lose less overall dmg. I understand the losses involved with not using a shield. The question is whether the improvement in dmg from going 2h would offset the additional damage that would have to be healed (concerning downtime).
    3) War/Sam: Only going 2h here because what's the point of a war without breaks, plus we'll have our piercing ws to go with Viper taken care of by the drg. Not as good as a pld, of course, but as Awntawn (think it was him) has said: Warriors are the brds of tanks. I wouldn't tank as well as a pld or hold aggro as well, but I sure as heck would tank better than a drg. Plus my damage would be better than a drk dressed up in war clothes. Question here is whether a war/sam can tank well enough to replace a pld as main tank, and if the extra dmg/breaks from the war make up for the loss of tanking ability. I'm leaning towards a 'yes' on the question about replacing a pld since I've read some favorable comments about people prefering a war/sam over a pld/war in a group, but I enjoy hearing all opinions.

    None of us has played the game past 38, so all of our knowledge about higher level play is based on what we have read, not experienced. So, please, let me know what you think about our problem and what the best solution might be. Actually, not the 'best' solution, cause that would be getting more people or finding a tank to toss in every time we head out.
    So barring one of those 'best' solutions, what would be your opinions about my thoughts and concerns with being a drk in a group with no real tank and about my views on what class would best help the linkshell in place of the drk.

    it would be harder to keep hate as war compared to a pld. pld would be a better hate keeper due to flash, provoke,cures and job abilities that can help control the hate.you can always skill up both 1 and 2 hand swords and macro them. if you have trouble controlling hate you can make a macro to switch1 and 2 hand sword. war/sam is a supporting class with incredibly usefull ws. but people tend to favor war since their damage output is much higher then the pld meaning more hate to the war. and many of the axe ws are usefull. but i think a pld would have more potential to control hate since that is what their job is for. you can always does this with a pld. wait for the puller to bring a monster, voke it off followed by a flash. wait till your hp drops a bit so you can cure2/cure3. and voke it again when the cooldown time wears off. sentinel and shield bash in between fights will also contribute to adding more hate.if you still have trouble controlling hate, you can switch the 1hand to 2hand sword. this would be much better then war/sam who is tanking with simply only provoke and high damamge to rely on. so what i am trying to say is, pld would make a better tank but would require more attention. war/sam would be better if you are lazy and dont want to press 6 different micros per fight. i would be a pld/war but if you disagree, you can always try out war/sam

          as a pally, you can go both 1hnd and 2hnd swords. your not limited to using only 1hnd swords. if your fighting monsters with aoe or spells/ws that can't be stopped by shieldbash that would be a good time to lvl ur g.sword, as long as they don't do hard dmg.

            Ah, quite the quandary really. I would of course suggest you just recruit a new tank, since DRK's contribute very well to PTs. Not only is SE and LR very nice skills, but at lvl 60 DRK/THF is great for transferring hate (trick+SE+LR+Guillo... don't need to use sneak since they aren't dependent on sneak for damage, unlike THF). But I digress.

            1) PLD/WAR 1hs: The classic FFXI tank. You WILL lose damage output with this in your PT, no doubt about it. They can still do some decent damage, but nothing compared to other damage dealing classes. This is not just because what weapon they use, but also the fact that all of your gear and food should be focused on DEFENSE and VIT, not ATTACK, STR, DEX, ACCURACY. You shouldn't have trouble keeping hate if you learn how to be a good PLD, and you will have better damage absorption than any other class in the game except NIN.

            2) PLD/WAR 2hs: Nope, won't work. It's not just the fact that you lose a shield (defense), shield bash, and shield blocking. Keep in mind that your gear/food is focused on defense. Other damage dealers will have +atk, +acc, etc... Even with all that they miss a lot. You will miss a ton more, and when you DO hit, it won't really be for much. More than 1hs, sure, but nothing compared to other damage dealers. This isn't really too viable for a serious XP PT.

            3) WAR/SAM: This will work, but your PT will just have to hold back more. WAR cannot keep aggro as well, so it would be best for your WHMs and BLM/WHMs to use Cure II on you repeatedly instead of Cure III/IV. As long as you keep your gear and food up to date, you will absorb damage *almost* as well as a PLD. Having a Great Axe will allow you to contribute to the damage, especially with the breaks. If you want to be a tank without sacrificing too much damage, WAR/SAM would be good. However, this combo really only gets good at 50+ (when you get AF) and especially 60+ (get meditate for SAM subjob). Before 60, /SAM isn't too practical. At level 60+, WAR/SAM can definitely be a tank. WARs, NINs, PLDs are all good tanks, but they will all require the PT to function a little differently. PLD are more reliable overall since they can keept he most hate, but with good communication the other 2 jobs will shine as well. Each have their pros and cons.

            I still think you should find someone else to be your tank and stick with DRK.. it's a nice class If that's not the case, WAR/MNK -> WAR/SAM may be a good choice for you, since you want to deal damage as well as tank. Sure as hell would be better than a DRG tank... Hope that helped.
