  • what is hate?

not up with the lingo sorry.
what is hate that everyone talks about when refering to dark knights? it is presumiably a bad thing, but i'm not sure what it is.
    thanks

hate is basicly how much a monster wants to kill you

whoever in your party has the most hate will get hit by the mob

    things that get you hate

    Attacking a mob
Healing a person who is fighting a mob
    Casting buff buff spells

the reason its referred to so much with drks is that way do so much dmg the monster always wants to kill us therefore we get a lot of hate

      the opposite of love ^_^.
actually, doing anything that is beneficial to your pt members or yourself gets hate too. heck even sitting down to heal does too i believe

Hate is what happens when those taru's come to my moghouse and tip over my lawn gnomes because they're taller than them.

Hate really is what gets generated in damage. Think of it as "pissiness factor". Who would you want to attack if you were getting wailed on? The redmage thats poking you, or that big warrior with a Two Handed Axe? The axe wielder does more damage so he generates more hate. Same thing applies to spells so a blackmage has to watch our for casting really powerful spells every 4 seconds.

          ^^ Yep, that's basically it.

For the most part, it's common sense.
The melee hitting for 60dmg a swing is going to generate more hate than the other melee who's hitting for 10dmg a swing in the same period of time.
The BLM that nukes for 130dmg a pop will obviously crown both of the melee in that example, which is why BLMs have to space out their nukes (ask a BLM to cast 4 big nukes in a row, and watch the creature smack them down as a result) so as not to draw aggro. Also keep in mind that some spells do not deal damage, and yet still generate hate. Take Enfeebling spells, for instance. You might not be doing damage to that Dragon, but he's obviously not going to be pleased when you Silence / Dia / Paralyze / Blind / Slow / Gravity him either. Keep that in mind.

Healing generates hate as well. Although I don't have an exact formula, I'd say it's probably safe to say that hps healed is equal to dmg dealt, in terms of generating hate.
So a 200 hp heal will generate approx. the same hate as a 200 dmg nuke. Maybe a bit less, but it's always good to err on the side of caution, right?

And then there are job abilities. Provoke, obviously, is the big one. It's a huge benefit here as it bumps up your hate so as to draw the enemy's attention.
See the WAR forum for extensive discussion on how, when, and why to use Provoke properly.

The reason why you see "hate" and how to manage it effectively often discussed here is because DRK do pretty impressive numbers in the melee damage department. As a result, it's not too uncommon for a monster you're attacking to start eyeing you up funny, and the last thing you want is a monster deciding you'd be more fun to chew on than the Paladin / Ninja / Warrior.

There's also more specific details, such as generating damage from skillchains (depending on who goes first and who goes last), which spells generate the most hate (and which deal the least), which job abilities paint a red target on you, and so on.

But that's pretty much the basics.
