What's the best way to level a DRK's magic skill? I'm behind my caps by quite a bit, but past the soloing point. Can I level it up simply by casting over and over again on really weak mobs?

I'm level 36 and my dark magic is 53 ( don't know the cap for my level), but to raise it, I just cast a drain or a bio on the enemy at the very beginning ( when the puller is on his way back and the monster is at a distance) or at the end when it is almost dead. Seems to raise the best vs tough or very tough monsters.

Lvl up Black mage its easier to lvl up your magic skills as you will use them almost exclusively. Unfortunately you have to go up to lvl 12 before you even get a Dark spell. (Bio and Drain are the first 2 a Blm gets)Has more time played on AKosygin's character then he does....

lvl 36 and only 53 in it, holy shit you are way behind! I'm lvl 18 and I got 45, really dark magic is super easy to lvl cause you pull with bio, and drain is so friggen important O.oMost memorable WoW vent convos on Burning Legion:
"Dude...I just wrote a sonnet, about taking a dump." - Kronos (2006)
"Guys, I just set my oven on fire by trying to cook ramen in it, and broke the fire alarm with a frying pan. I think I'm in trouble." - Brawny (2006)
"But Hisdon, why wouldn't you want The Unblockable Shield - wait a minute..." - Sasukekun (2005)

in my party i'm never the puller since we have a ranger... So i basically just cast it maybe once per fight. I'm not going to bio when we have a blm casting it, and drain is the only other dark spell i have, unless you count the absorbs that seem to never raise my skill.
edit: also I don't know about you, but my party would much rather me save my tp then sit to regain my mana every 3 fights or whatever.

wouldn't it be benifitial to lvl a Black Mage before becoming a Dark Knight?..
I plan on subbing my Warrior with a Black Mage until i can become a Dark Knight. wouldn't that give me a significant head-start on lvling my dark and elemental magics?...---------------------------

You should be using absorb agi and dex (if you have it) or possibly str at the beginning of battle. Also use aspire if the enemy as mp and drain if your being attacked. sometimes MB with elemental magic for fun. reusing absorb stats magic and drain is enough to max darkness magic.

You can cast dark magic spell on weak monsters over and over to raise it but the problem is if they are to weak it'll never raise or only by .1 after hrs and hrs of use.
If you want it raise fast get in a good party that's taking on VT or IT monsters and use them when ever you have a chance too. Hell cast a spell the blm has already casted if you need to raise dark skill. Just let him know why you are doing that so they understand, who knows they may be welcome to having someone else do it if theres is already maxed..
To add when you use the magic against VT or IT monsters you're skill will raise fast every other spell or every spell will get .3 or if lucky you may get the elusive .5 in one of them.

(Offensive) spell skills cap like melee skills. You can only cap for your level on even match or higher.
You can, if your skills are behind, get your skills capped for a level equal to the level of a monster you are fighting. For instance, suppose you had 0 dark skill. You could level it up to what would be your cap for level 13, on level 13 mobs, etc. It doesn't matter what your job level is, only what your spell skill level is.
Monster that are "too weak to be worthwhile" can even give skill raises, if your skill is low enough, but once your skill reaches the cap for the level of the mob, it'll stop going up.
Hmmm, hard to explain...anyway, the gist is that you can level badly-neglected spell skills on really weak mobs, up to a point.

none of the absorb spells are quest prizes, unfortunately. I think I mentioned this before:
STR, VIT, AGI, INT are dropped from lv30 Orcs in Davoi, Bone series in Eldieme, and Demon series in Zvhal.
MND and CHR are sold in Norg from a woman (its a guild shop) to the left of the stairs.
DEX is dropped from Count Bifrons (HNM) in Zvhal.

So let him know he doesn't have to cast it. That's one less spell that he has to worry about getting off, so he can use his time and mana for other important spells. And since Bio cannot be resisted, you don't have to worry about it being a whole lot weaker than a BLM's Bio.Originally posted by lavaroach
