Are there any spells that just aren't necessary and can just skip?

  • #2
You're asking that at lv7...just quit now and save yourself the trouble.

In your 50's, there are a few spells that you can skip. You can also get away without buying Rasp, Drown, Choke, but you should definately buy Shock, Burn and Frost.

Honestly though...you need every single spell for something at some time. If you don't want to put that effort in...don't bother playing a blm.

If your really low on money (many people are in the 30-50 range because of spells and equip if it's your first character) you can afford to skip the first line of -ga spells, Poison 2 and Poisonga's are skippable also, The spike spells (ice spikes, blaze spikes and shock spikes) are skippable as they are primarily a solo'ing spell line and can be overlooked in a party situation.

Also, as Atrapos said, at lvl 50-60 range you can buy Ancient magics that really in most cases you will never need in a exp situation, so you can skip a few of the more expensive ones, but you should make sure you try and get the strongest element ones Freeze, Burst, and Flare (expensive, so i can understand if some may just overlook buying it).

I would have to disagree with the elemental enfeebles comment that you only REALLY need shock, frost, and burn of the 6. Certainly those are the 3 most used of the 6, so without a doubt you should have those spells, but the other 3 all have their situations where they are needed. Since they can stack with eachother you can create a more versitile elemental enfeeble choice, specific to the monster your fighting, and since they are not overly expensive for the effectiveness of themselves i would suggest to buy all 6 of the elemental debuffs.

On a side note, you shouldn't try to think "Which spells can i overlook to save money" but instead "Which gear can i overlook to save money". Because as a mage your top priority should always be your spells, and untill elemental staffs at 51 the equipment you get is never as dramatic as a new spell, and is often more costly.

Note my last sentence. I said he/she could "get away with" not having the other 3, as you don't often use them, but I did go on to say that you *should* have all your spells. I forgot about Poison II and Poisonga - I still don't have those O.o

About the -ga's...you can basically skip buying them until the II line...but you should also scout out where you'll be leveling. The only use for them is bursting, so if you can't burst -ga's where you'll be leveling, there's no point. I always made sure to know where we were going and what renkei would be happening, and made sure to have the best possible spell to burst with. So, I have a random collection of -ga spells (all the III's up to Firaga III, all the II's but the random expensive one, and random I's). Never bothered me, as the only elements that are really worth bursting are fire, ice, and thunder. I can count the times I bursted Stone on 1 hand, Aero on another, and Water...I bursted a few times leveling on processionaires with Waterga III. Just make sure you're never holding your party back by not having a particular -ga and you'll be fine.

I tried to keep my list complete and up-to-date until recently I really started to feel a financial strain between all the scrolls and elemental staves ( got Pluto and Ice so far. ^^ )

I find myself really have to chose between some scrolls and gears while my best effort at farming fell behind the leveling of my static party.

The first spells I skipped were earth element spells. Stonga II, Quake, and Stone III. I can confidently say that missing those spells has no impact what-so-ever on my performance in exp parties. I will probably skip Flood and a few other ancient spells too, until my gil making can catch up with all the stuff I had to buy. ( next up, SleepgaII  )

There are a few you can skip alone the way without any penalty on what you do in a party, but if you are asking it at level 7... boy will you be in trouble in a few more levels. Start farm more. Take breaks in level to do quests and farm, fish, mine, harvest, craft or trade. Find out where scrolls are from, so you don't keep getting price gauged at the AH.

Don't skip Stone III. You'll miss it when you're leveling on torama in a few levels.

don't miss out on ANY of the sleeps.

sleep, sleep 2, sleepga, sleepga 2
those spells are by far the most important spells any black mage can have. these spells should be thought of as 4 possible chances to sleep adds.

yeah, you can miss out on the -ga 1 like atropos says. hell, i don't even have thundaga 1

Whoa, there are actually things weak exclusively to earth beside thunder elemental? Didn't know that.

Oh well, guess some of that elemental staff fund will have to go towards Stone III.

I meant I am saving up for it. Although now I am thinking it might be easier for me to just do the quest for it.

The sleepga II quest is hard. Ridiculously hard. You'll need 12-18 lv70+s, preferably a lv75 tank, and a ton of melee damage. BLM's are almost entirely useless against Agas (the NM eye you face), as he will completely resist a good portion of your nukes (yes, as in he will RESIST your 100+ mp nuke for 0 damage). In addition to that, you have to do a bunch of annoying fortune teller quests, and a few other quests, just to open the quest. It's much easier to just farm the money than to try to do all that.

sometimes I feel that my main job in the game is Fisherman, since I spend more time fishing then nuking stuff.
