  • Question from RDM to knowers of MB

    Hello there!

I'm a dabbler in rdm, and have gotten to 54 sofar with my eurotrash pt...

51+ means introduction of those lovely elemental staves, and upon picking up Dark staff , I was very pleased.

We have a set pt with 2 * mnk + nin as melee, which means that our skillchain possibilities are a bit limited. We're currently more or less forced to do wind chains, will try out nin with sword/katana for fusion.

Since I'm contributing with bursts only, normal nuking rules are a bit off, although not much.

Now comes the question, or actually, 2 questions:

We are going for bone mobs, and we'll burst fire on these, since that works really nice. What would give me more efficient MB's, Ice staff for the elem skill or Fire staff for the hidden +10% on fire nukes? Also, would it be worth picking up wind staff, or will it be more important with elem skill due to my naturally crappy skill? (C rating) As in less resists outvalue the -10% on wind nukes.

    Eagerly awaiting your opinions ^^

it all depends on what you think is more important.

rdm elemental is crap, it's a given, with the +10 skill it won't help much at higher level compare to how a 318 elemental skill blm has his spell resisted anyways

for MBs, the resistance rates on your nukes are drastically lowered. i think if you keep elemental skill capped, you should be ok with a fire staff. you'll still get some resists though, but shouldn't be too common, especially on skels. secondly, i'd just grab the ice staff...not too many mobs are weak to wind, so the wind bursts would have a higher resist rate, so its worth the extra 10 elemental skill (which helps quite a bit) for a little less damage on bursts. since you're talking about aero II burst thats maybe 20 damage less than normal, which isn't all that much.

do not use wind spells when you have an ice staff equipped.

From what i have read, there are 2 "hidden" stats to an ice staff

        +10% damage with ice spells

        and

        -10% damage on wind spells.

I could be wrong, but this is my understanding

So does Dark staff have a +10% dark spell bonus and -10% Light spell bonus? (i.e., should I avoid having Dark staff equipped when I cast Cure spells?)

Apperantly, unlike Banish, Cure is not affected by it.

I cure for just as much with my Pluto's Staff (+15% dark, -15% light) on.

Wouldn't Cure not be affected, since it's not 'Light' magic, but 'Healing' magic? Along those lines, I would think Banish would take the -10% hit.

                  You would be correct ^_^

Dark Staff gives approximately a 10% bonus to drain and aspir. In addition, it generally let's you get through resistance a little bit better (so on average, you end up with drain/aspirs that about 15-20% better, not just 10%). The same is true of the elemental staves. Not only do they give a 10% bonus to damage, they also give a slight boost to the chance of not being fully resisted. For instance, against Za'dha Adamantking, when I fought him at lv66, I couldn't land any spells without elemental seal...however, my blizzard-line of spells were landing for about 75% of max damage, whereas all my other spells were landing for less than 15% of max damage. A lv70 blm was landing all spells for near max damage, so it wasn't that the thing was weak to ice (I think he's weak to thunder).

As such, I'd tell you to get a fire staff if you intend to MB fusion, and a wind staff if you intend to MB wind. The ice staff would help if you planned to MB ice, or if you intended to nuke outside of MBing...but if you only nuke on MB, the +10 elemental magic skill would not outweigh the -10% wind damage, nor would it be better than the +10% damage given by the fire staff.
