BLM/SUM or SUM/BLM

I'm probably gonna be one of these two job/sub sets because the summons are awesome and i like BLM's too but i was wondering. Which would be better? BLM/SUM or SUM/BLM?

well if you go blm/sum you will have lots of mp to cast your spells..but no summons......if you go sum/blm you will have less blm spells to choose from earlier on but you will be able to summon your avatars...

i want the summons so i'll be a SUM/BLM

both are a bad idea.

blm/smn is bad because you lack utility. all it does is make you an MP tank.

smn/blm is bad because with the current state of smns, all they so is to summon something, use an ability and desummon something. the rest of the time is spent healing, as a smn/whm.

If you want to be SMN, I recommend the following path:

- BLM to 18 (Get a sub job and Dezone1)
- Level WHM to 30 subbing BLM
- Do SMN adv job quest.
- Level WHM as main and SMN as sub (Try to keep SMN at half the level of WHM)
- At WHM/SUM 60 or so, start doing the primes.
- Once you get some primes, start leveling SUM with WHM as sub.

This would be the fastest route. I love BLM, but if you're set on becoming a SMN, go with WHM. With WHM, you will also be leveling faster than other jobs. My recommendation is for the fastest way to become a GOOD SMN. Just my 2 cents.

neither of those would really cut it, here's the reasoning

As a blackmage, im always way ahead of the mp of the whitemage i group with, i help heal, and blackmage spell cost is nothing to laugh about. Might be the refresh robe, but he has the +5 mp per healing tunic.

If you're a summmoner sub blackmage, you'd be all about damage(people want summoners for utility and healing, since tehy're better than a straight whitemage at that)

As a summoner / blackmage your damage would be sub par to a straight blackmage

A blackmage with summoner sub will just be a blackmage with alot of MP

whitemage sub lets you teleport, group heals, resist buffs, buffs, status cures etc. whitemage is the best sub for either blackmage or summoner, sneak invis etc, countless bonuses for going whm over anything else

You can't teleport with a WHM sub. Well you could a Is'ppose at L72 but you can't get all the tele ports, I'm not sure which ones are L38 but you can't use those.

I went SMN/BLM then i realized without primes SMN isn't as much fun, so i'm lvlin my BLM and looking for nice high lvls too. Once i get some SMNs i'll go SMN/BLM

The debuffs are nice plus more mp is gained as a SMN/BLM then SMN/WHM.

oh and one thing, just because your main is a blackmage or a summoner, dont think people want you for only that. When people group a mage they want a backup healer

(Group is usually 3 mages, 3 melee)
Mage combos can be the following:

Mage 1: Whitemage, summoner,red mage

Mage 2: Red mage / bard

mage 3: blackmage

(2 redmage is fine) pretty much need a blackmage, i take off almost 1/3 ->1/2 a mob's hp with a single MB for 1300+ at lvl 73

anyway, enough rambling...you need whitemage sub for blackmage or summoner or dont expect groups, you can pull off a redmage sub *maybe* but whitemage sub is far superior

Well what do you suggest i be? I'm a BLM and i want to stay that way, i have no idea what subjob i want to be, i wanted to be a sum because they are cool but i do not want to be a healer! Is there any good BLM combination that doesn't involve being a WHM?

I guess /RDM would work pretty well for BLM too if you feel that strongly against playing a healer, even just as a sub.


Right now I have both my WHM and RDM leveled up to 1/2 of my main job (BLM), because I want to see for myself the difference of the 2. What I have seen so far, is that while /RDM does add a little bit more "ummph" into your BLM, but it's now worth losing all the utility of a WHM. The -na spells (status cures), the -ra spells (party buffs), and getting higher level cures earlier. BLM/RDM a nice combo, just that it hasn't worked as well as /WHM for me so far.

Now I pretty much only pulls out BLM/RDM to use a sword when I farm. Other times I have /WHM on, which also gets me regular party invites. I guess BLM/WHM just looks more attractive to many parties wanting a nuker as well as a backup healer.

QUESTION!

Tomoh- you said after i get BLM to lvl 18 and get Dezone1 (that's warp right?) Switch to WHM and sub BLM. How? I thought your subjob had to be half your main job. That means i couldn't do that until my WHM what at lvl 36! plz explain.
