Hullo. I was wondering about BLM and playing the game for the first time...do they mix well?? As an early BLM, how limited would I be in Gil and spells. Would I be of any use/be able to party easily?? Thanks in advance.

Your first 15-20 levels might be a bit slower than a warrior, but not by much. By the time you get your subjob and sub redmage or whitemage, you not only become a powerful nuker but a decent healer too. Blackmages in their 20s get groups very quickly. It probably continues that way for many levels as it seems like there are 5 melees for every 1 mage in this game.
Spells are very expensive, and you might not be able to buy all of them as soon as you level, but make sure to prioritize and get the important ones. Its true that playing a mage job is expensive, but its much less expensive than playing a job such as ninja or ranger. If you take the time to do quests and gil farm every once in a while you'll have enough to get by.

I agree with pilsbane.. levels 9-11 were especially painful..
but in the last 2 nights ive gone up 3 (18-21) levels.. with only about 7 hours or so of playing time..
I was always getting invites for groups during the night..
once you get blizzard/fire/stonega/waterga you nuking ability becomes much more enticing for groups.. you can easily hit for 70-90 damage with those..
I will suggest Selbina for leveling from 18-22.. and selbina also has a good selection of mid-high level spells for sale.. i picked up stonega for 1500 and waterga for 2400...

Thanks for the tip, but there's one problem. Gustaberg isn't close to Windurst whatsoever, and that, being my soon to be starting city, will be a bit of a problem. I have a slight hunch that maybe, just maybe, it will be rather hard for a beginner BLM to travel almost to the other side of the continent, unless I have a much higher level WHM with me, but that's not likely.

Windurst isn't bad damn crawlers don't drop silk enough. Though. Leave the goblins ALONE!!!
I don't care what anyone says. I will hunt anything but, goblins.
Here is a rule I learned about goblins.
When you are in a region and you are fighting in that region for exp don't look at goblins. Just run the other way. Now when you come back to that region when you are stronger you should be alright.
But until then you are kind of SOL."*IT'S GONNA EAT ME!!!!*"

Windurst is a good place to level any mage. Lots of good mage equipment from easy Windurst quests, and good mobs to fight. You just have to go for a lot of easy mobs instead of fewer harder ones. As for goblins... when you're a couple levels above them, you'll want to go after them for the crystals and the good stuff they sometimes drop - and they'll still give XP. But you do have to be careful, just like with Yagudos/Quadavs/Orcs.
