You could solo Hellmines at 53 but it would be tough since the bats in the basement are 53-55. Many of them would be tough. At 54 you will be a little safer, but its so easy to die if you fail a charm or cant find a pet. Those bombs hit you hard, especially after they use berserk. The object of course is to have them blow up so you dont have to wory about pet swapping. Sometimes they are just stubborn and wont blow. Anyway, after exp'ing on these for a while, you're bound to get a coffer key.
Also, regarding your ranger quest, dont worry about that. As long as you open the coffer as a BST, it will be the BST helm that you get. If you go as RNG youll get the RNG item.
It is frustrating to find the coffer though, because you need help from 3 other people to get behind those stupid gates. I just camped behind gate 3 for a day and got the coffer.
