At that level, its very easy to steal hate from your pet. Especially with more powerful weapon like scythe. Remember there are 2 things that will make your pet lose hate... taking more damage than its giving, and someone else giving damage. Think of it as an see-saw... you start out at even level, pet hits mob, gains hate, mob hits pet, pet loses hate, back and forth... if you come in and hit the mob, and your pet doesnt have enough hate to cover it, the mob turns to you. If you take damage, the mob will likely turn back to your pet. At later levels (I still havent really gotten there) your pets damage is so much better than yours, that it becomes more difficult to steal the hate.
Hope that explanation helps... best I could come up with. BST learn hate control very well. Its hard to explain, you just know.
One more thing. If you plan to use the ghetto-leave trick to finish mobs off (where you use heel then stay so the mob finishes off your pet and you can get full exp) make sure you havent done anything to get hate in the fight or the mob will come and attack you. After lvl 35 this is not a factor.FFXIV: ARR - Leviathan Server - 50 Bard, 47 Dragoon, 50 All crafts, 48 Botany, 48 Miner

Will having more +CHR help?
When I was levelling in Inner Horutoto Ruins last night as BST14.. was using EMs to go after EM/T. Problem is... I let my pet take off around 10~15% then cast a Dia to lower defense... and still got aggro
Kinda hard to level BST at early levels ; ;Rank10 Bastokan~|ZM8|PM3-3B Lioumere -_-

At the point you casted Dia, your pet probably had no hate, thus it came right after you. Remember if your pet is taking more damage than it is giving, it basically has no hate, and anything you do will make the mob turn to you.Originally posted by Sukashi

Hell even at level 31, its hard to cast cure without the mob coming my way and kicking my ass for it. Kinda defeats the purpose of curing for 30hp if the mob comes and hits you for 40hp
BTW level 14 was the hardest level I had so far as BST. Even though you only need like 2400 exp or something to level, its hard to get. I actually had a friend PL me to 15 where I could safely take Dhamels in Tahrongi. Since then its been 100% solo.FFXIV: ARR - Leviathan Server - 50 Bard, 47 Dragoon, 50 All crafts, 48 Botany, 48 Miner

Naw +chr wont help that, it is tough in the early goings, but what I found to work was never casting Dia period, something about that spell just makes mobs extremely mad, and no matter what you'll most likely get whacked. At that level I wasnt even fighting alongside my pet, just letting 1 pet die, toss in another, run a good distance back and use heel-->wait 1--->stay until the next pet died and finished the mob off when it has little to no health. I didnt start fighting alongside until 25ish when you notice your pets outdamageing you, but even then I'll wait until my pet either is at half health and mob at half health to jump in or if mob is higher health than my pet and want to slim the gap a little, then back out of range and Heel-->wait 1--->Stay. At this point the mob will most likely hit your pets 2wice and come after you, dont panic, take a hit or 2 and it will run back to finish your pet off, just run out of radar distance and heal.

thnks for the responses they helped me alot. I'm not gettin asmuch aggro as before once i got used to lettin my pet die through heel. I guess I'll wait till higher lvls to fight alongside pet when they can hold aggro better. thnks again

I fought beside my pet my whole BST career so far... (and suffered several deaths because of it too) but it was mostly in an effort to keep my weapons skilled up (Axe, Scythe) Whats the good of fighting at all if your axe is only level 20? You wont even hit a level 25 mob ^^ If I were you I would jump in with my axe for skillups only, and stop fighting when it caps.FFXIV: ARR - Leviathan Server - 50 Bard, 47 Dragoon, 50 All crafts, 48 Botany, 48 Miner

i had an evan match vs a d/c. about halfway thru the fight i went in to take a few swings. an on my fisrt swing i drew hate. now mind you i never casted a spell, kneeled an heeled. my mob basically was doing more damage. how did i generate enough hate so fast?
dia spell is evil no matter when you cast it, the moment your pet miss's twice, you have to mob hunting you down. so know i only use it when my mob is weaker then the mob im fighting..

It's become apparent to me that it just takes time for things to balance out. At my level now, it seems like its hard to steal hate from your pet. I was skilling on Rumble Crawlers in nest last night, and I basically couldnt pull hate with my axe unless my pet missed a couple times or took a few critical hits, or I did a WS.Originally posted by little ninja

Later I changed to Scythe (Demonslicer- very powerful) and one hit I did 95 dmg (non-crit) +5 darkness damage and didnt pull hate, even after constantly pounding the mob with more damage than my pet.
Sometimes its hard to judge, but eventually you get used to it. BTW, wait till you get to 25 and get sic.... that acts like provoke, I swear. You have to wait a while to use it or the mob will come right at you. My strategy is to use "fight" then use "sic" before my pet actually attacks, so it gives me no hate.FFXIV: ARR - Leviathan Server - 50 Bard, 47 Dragoon, 50 All crafts, 48 Botany, 48 Miner

I believe that when you /heal it causes hate everytime you get HP/MP. I'm not too sure because I've noticed as WHM sometimes in a PT someone would pull. Then the puller would have hate for a few seconds while everyone is engaging, and sometimes it would randomly whack me. (Noticed this MANY MANY times.)Originally posted by little ninja

i didnt do anything new pet that was an evan match vs the decent challange pet. the enemy was about 5/8 dead when i went in for the atk. my first swing hit for 3 damage less then the pet did, an the mob turned to me right away an wacked me. the evan match pet did about 3 damage more then the dc. an i dont recall it ever critical hittin my pet.

Pet hate seems to be more related to your dps than anything else. Early on I used that weak orc axe thing for level 5 I think BST. I used it til about level 20 ish, this allowed me to keep my axe reasonably capped and control the flow of the fight. However, til you get release your usually going to just throw pets at things and heel and wait for it to die, or just try to chain and bite the 30%.
When you get release the game changes. You can start using a weapon, and you really want to, since you will need 100TP to get a finishing WS off. Of course you probably don't want to melee til the final pet for multi pet jobs. At least in my experience if I melee on my first pet I'll never get the mob off of me on the next. The beast myth: "I hear it gets better next level"
My pet has more HP right now than a level 75 galka monk >.> If only it could provoke...
