I've done a couple tests with songs under subbed conditions. Like ???/brd. Song power is approximately 41% of the full songs potential. This is most likely due to the fact ???/brd only has access to one of the 3 skills brds use to effect songs, singing. The power is even more deminished when compared to a properly equipped brd (HQ instruments). With a +1 instrument song power is roughly increased by 5% and with a +2 instrument its about 10%. So youre missing out on lots and lots of songs full potential if you go ???/brd.
As to brds subbing melee. I dont think its a good idea. Last time i checked (which was a long time ago) i dealt about the same dmg as a pld per hit, which isnt very good from the start. The little opportunity a brd gets to melee doesnt warrant subbing a melee job to brd as a main.
