  • AF2: Is it necessary to kill all 3 NMs?

Many have said that it used to be if you killed the main one, you can wait for the two minions to despawn and still complete the quest. However I've also heard that this may have been "corrected" by the patches so that you are now required to kill all 3 within the time limit. Can anyone who's done this recently confirm this? Many thanks.

Also assuming no high level help, a full PT at what level will have a decent chance at beating this?

Unless it changed on the patch on the 26th, you only need to kill one.

Hi Siven, let me help you.

I just did it maybe a week or so ago and I'm 100% sure how it works. You only need to cure pull (be snuck and use cure) on this one:

      Owl Guardian

There is another "Guardian" one and a named one, both you can let despawn. I had a 71 monk friend with me who smoked the hell out of it with Asuran Fists, I would say that a PT of 60's could definitely manage to kill it, and having a monk only greater ensures your victory.

Once you kill Owl Guardian, go back to the sarcophogaus you used to spawn them, and examine again. You should get a cutscene. Sneak will not fade during the cutscene so you won't get aggro from the ghosts/remaining skels.

Thanks for the replies! Assuming no help I'm going to attempt this with my set PT at lv55...that's when they want to do M5-2. It can't be tougher than the Shadow Lord, right?

NM = Named Monster, an extra hard version of the average monster that often drops rare and valuable items, or is required to kill for certain quest/missions.

This quest is buggy, mIze, and attempting to give a definitive answer when you have done the event a whopping total of one time is counter-productive and might end up wasting a lot of time if you go unprepared.

When I did the quest, I did it at about 3a.m. with a few LS members that were standing around in jeuno. Two 57+ dragoons and two 57+ WHM. I didn't think the PT was strong enough to handle Yum Kumil, so I took 2 holy waters just to be sure.

At first I tried the "kill only 1 owl guardian" approach and was not given the boots after I inspected the tomb again. So I traded another holy water (which it didn't take from me, but instead placed it back in my inventory) and the 3 skeletons spawned again. This time we killed Yum Kumil, the stronger NM skeleton, and won with one or two close calls. The two DRG's evasion stat was relatively high compared to the NM's accuracy, but the 110ish hits with 200 added effect damage really hurt when he did manage to hit them. Their level difference really showed in their pentathrusts though, as each one landed for 500-700.

To answer your question, a PT that works well together at level 52 should have little trouble handling this fight. If your LS has any non-gimp ninjas (meaning warrior sub, utsusemi tanks), invite them along to tank, for obvious reasons. If you don't know any NIN/WAR, you would need a lot of burst healing for when your PLD goes red. The shoes are really not that great and are not required to complete other AF, so I would recommend not sweating it and going back once you are level 57 or so for a pushover of a fight.

You don't have to be arrogant about it, I was posting my own conclusions (and was told by another bard who completed all AF how to do it) based on my experience. So I have 2 people who did it the exact same way. For all YOU know in your whopping ONE time of going you might have farked up and not inspected the right tomb, waited too long, et al.

Siven, I recommend a PT of 60 for a sure fight, and those NM skels are more difficult than Liches that a genkai 1 pt would fight. 52 would be a stupid average-level party to bring and you would probably end up with a death or two. They have every special a normal skel has including AE damage-blind and AE leech, and hell slash. One bad streak of specials and that PT would be raped.

If you have any monk friends, I'd say 65+, they could easily solo the skels one at a time with some healing from rdm or whm (though again, I did just Owl with my friend and got it).

Good luck, and please don't listen to arrogant people like that. Advice like that is what gets you killed.

From the same person who brought you "Tros is level 66 omg!!! Do not attempt without level 70 japanese!!!"

I don't know what to tell you other than.. no.

When I attempted the fight with an Owl Guardian the first time, it simply did not work. With the same PT minutes later, killing Yum Kumil DID work. It took even longer to kill Yum Kumil, imagine that, and the quest worked. I have been back there two more times for a total of 3 bards, and they killed Yum Kumil, got their boots, went home happy, the end.

For as many times as it has worked for you or others, it didn't work for me. If I had followed advice like this (and not carried 2 holy waters), I would have ended up frustrated, gone home without boots, and wasted my time and the time of my friends. Forgive me for trying to save someone else from making this mistake.

The PT does definitely NOT have to be level 60. A PT of 55 of decently skilled/equipped players can handle it without breaking a sweat, and I stand by my comment that a PT of 52s that have played together and are competent can also succeed.

mIze, since you felt like starting the personal attacks, I'll only tell you that you should try grouping with better players some time. It's amazing how much farther 6 people with skill and proper equipment can get than 6 without, I wish you and the alliance of 12 japanese Lv75s good luck with AF3.

This is turning into a flame war and obviously you're not mature enough to post without acting like an ass. Here I just want you to notice something:

You set the tone for the rest of your post with just that sentence. If you'd just said, "While mize's experience may be accurate in that instance, I know the quest is buggy and that's not always the way to successfully complete it", you would have spared so much argument. Why do you have to do that?

Sorry that your topic got fudged Siven, I guess arrogance is bliss for some people. I hate trolls~

NM = Notrious Monster, not Named Monster
NMs are always guaged at impossible to guage.

                      My experience:

First fight: Killed both gaurdians inspected and no cutscene.
Second fight: Killed a guardian and Kumil and no cutscrene.
On my THIRD TRY: I went straight into the curscene.

I got 3 tries with just one holy water. (It took the first one but not second or third.)

Do you have to kill all three? I think so. I think it was fixed in a recent patch. I left 2 times empty handed with a party of 3 52's and 3 60's. Third time Iw as so mad aat these thing asked all my friend and got a full alliance (I was 54 by this time) level range 54-62.

And i didn't even have to fight. >.< But my friend who also bard needed to so we killed them for him instead.

So yes I think you have to kill all three.. then again I have no idea... the quest is buggy as hell.

                        Just did this last night....
Pulled out Owl Guardian, killed him, ran back to the Sarcophagus'
The other NM's had despawned, but I still got the cutscene.
                        Very buggy quest =x
