  • Level 40 Bard Equipment

After about a month of playing as a BRD I've finally reached the level 30 plateau. Now, I'm looking ahead to the future and am trying to figure out what I want as my equipment when I reach level 40. Here's what I've figured out so far.

    Instruments: Mary's Horn Lv.14 "Lullaby +1" and Traversiere +1 Lv.32 "Madrigal +2"
Head: Noble's Ribbon (already got one)
Neck: Bird Whistle (already got one too)
    Body: Cuir Bouilli Lv.38 DEF:28
    Hands: Devotee's Mitts Lv.27 DEF:% MP+8 INT-4 MND+5
    Rings: 2x Pearl Ring Lv.36 CHR+2 Light Resistance+5
    Back: White Cape Lv.32 DEF:3 MND+2
    Waist: Corsette Lv.40 DEF:5 STR-2 AGI-2 CHR+5
    Legs: Cuir Trousers Lv.38 DEF:20
    Feet: Cuir Highboots Lv.38 DEF:8

As for weapon, I didn't see anything tasty in the Jeuno AH. The AF knife is questable at Level 40 right? I figure I'll just get that.

My current equipment consists of cotton Level 23 gear, a Friars Rope, two Opal rings, and a Cornette +1.

I've figured that I'll need at least 160k in gil to purchase all of the above, if prices hold where they are. Hopefully I can farm that in less than a couple weeks.

Is there any better equipment you think I should get? Should I hold off on something until after Level 40? If so, let me know. I want to become a Bard people can rely on, and I don't want to be gimped by bad equipment.

I'd say you've got some good equipment for the level your at.
Be sure to have a Cornette +1, that should be your highest priority to buy.
The Cuir Set is Optional... Remember that your a BRD.. Style > Stats XD (You don't need defense anyways... you'll never get hit)
at 54 change your cape to a Jester's Cape (and if you can afford it, Jesters Cape +1 XD) and your pretty much set till AF Status.

At 40 I sold my Gambison, and bought the Cuir set.. of course with visions of BCNM and needing the most defense I could get.

I really wish I had kept my Gambison, MUCH better looking

When is the next really neat/unique piece of armor coming up that I can buy? So, I can stow this Cuir/leather armor looking set.

I did a whole bunch of BCNM 40's this weekend and the armor i used for lvl 40 was-

        Full elvaan RSE
        monster signa
        Bird whistle
enhance earring and a +mp earring
an astral ring and a HQ lvl 36 ring for +3 charisma (I had a second lvl 36 +3 chr ring on my inventory, if needed i would switch it for astral in case i needed the hp or chr boost.)
I used a +def ithink ram mantle or something like that- (my evade is low so i didnt bother with any +eva or +agi)
        I used corsette +1
and for insturment i had all of the horns i needed up to that lvl including mary's horn.

The armor worked we won BCNM like 14 times and no sleeps were resisted.

Its important you starting getting good +chr equip at this lvl. You will need it from now on

I have to disagree about a bunch of chr at 40+. Personally, I focus on MP over chr, so that I have 290mp now at 50 while only 46+16 chr. Why the mp over chr? Lullaby resists are rare, and all the added MP is worth a lot more than elegy+threnody. Its not like I get constant resists on them either. Furthermore, as of now, I can heal our set's blink tank fine by mysef. Normally try and get a rdm or blm/whm to help out with heals, but its not entirely needed at this point.

Concerning the setup, I'd say grab an electrum hairpin and two electrum rings for mp at least. Should be able to afford an ram mantle, or whatever the level 38 version is, as well for a small MP boost. Use a holy phial over a whistle, but keep the whistle incase you really need it. Keep a San D'orian Horn as your general instrument and put it macros to switch isntruments when you sing that song. That +3cha is useful if you don't have a +X instrument. Oh, and grab a signa when you can afford it.

Oh, and my recommendations can be semi-ignored for BCNMs. Then you want to concentrate on chr, def, and mp in that order, since you're a taru. Personally, since I'm a galka, I go for chr, mp, and def in that order.

I went ahead and purchased a Frost Robe, for MP purposes of course. I may go for the Cuir Bouilli just for the BCNMs though, since DEF would take precedence over MP.

I've currently got the Devotee's Mitts for my hands, and I think I'll stick with them since Hand equipment with better DEF is negligible.

Is there anything better I can put on my back in time for BCNM? Right now I'm perfectly happy with a White Cape providing some extra MND.

At level 38 I'll be getting that staff which gives a +8MP and +8HP boost, can't remember what its name is offhand.

I've now got both the Traversiere +1 and Cornette +1, so all I need is the Mary's Horn and I'll be set on instruments for a very long time.

For my earrings, I picked up a couple cheap Onyx's for a boost of +2MP for each. Is there anything better I can get around level 40 for BCNM purposes or regular EXPing?

Finally, I do plan to stick with getting a couple Pearl Rings, but if I finish the Gobbie Bag quest I might get some MP raising rings and switch between the two as needed. I will also stick with the Cuir Equipment for my Legs and Feet, and a Corsette for my Waist.

Your a Galka and have 290 MP at level 50!? Boy, I need some of the equipment your wearing!

Could you tell me what your wearing? You can get both the 290 MP and +16 CHR at the same time?

              I'm a 42nd Hume and have something like 120 MP and +9 CHR. :\

              Here is what I'm wearing..

Silver Hairpin (I believe Elektrum is 50th)
              Bird Whistle - +3 CHR
AF1 - +2 CHR also +2 AGI for some reason
Hope Ring? - cant remember name +2 CHR
Cuir Body armor piece - just DEF
              Cuir Boots - just DEF
Hume RSE leggings - +1 CHR +32 MP
              Cuir Gloves - Just DEF
              Friar's Rope - +5 MP

The one thing I could easily upgrade would be that I'm still wearing the Bastokan Ring, and I believe at 40 I can wear the elektrum rings now. That would be a nice +20 MP.

I'm thinking you must be using Signa to get that kind of CHR.. which isn't a feasible option for me at this time, but I should be able to get close to that MP I would hope.. it would be damn nice!
              :spin:

                173 mp + 30 Chr

I find more CHR is more to my liking ^^

                Noble's Ribbon +3 CHR (15k)
                Bird Whistle +3 CHR (2~3k)
                Jester Cape +7 CHR (4~5k)
                Corsette +5 CHR (3~4k)
                Justaucorps +2 CHR (~20k)
                Shellbuster +4 CHR (4~5k)
                2 Hope rings +4 CHR (20k total)
                Hamelin Flute +2 CHR (50k)
Royal Spearman's horn +3 CHR (cp or ~6k) <-- good wind instrument if u dont have the gil to spend.

I was looking to updgrade Jester Cape to the +1 version (120~140K) but I figured 30~33 CHR wouldn't make much of a difference unless someone can confirm that it does? Having more MP is your preference but obviously you do not want too little. I can use divine seal + curaga II which gives a nice 380hp heal to everyone. I won't be getting Monster Signa unless maybe if I got it as a drop but even so, I would use that 350K to buy better equipment or crafting

Yeah, I'm somewhat of a freak in terms of MP. I have two sets of gear I keep around

                  Normal Gear (900hp, 290mp, +16chr, 132 def)

                  Weapon - Monster Signa (duh)
                  Head - Electrum Hairpin
Neck - Holy Phial (with bird whistle kept incase)
                  Body - Galka RSE
                  Hands - Galka RSE
                  Legs - Galka RSE
                  Feet - Galka RSE
                  Back - Aurora Mantle
Waist - Desert Stone (with Corsette kept incase)
                  Rings - 2 Electrum Rings
Earrings - 2 Wing Earrings (I'm really lazy about upgrading earrings)
Instrument - San D'Orian Horn as base, but I carry several others

Melee Gear (905hp, 164mp, +5chr, 192 def) (I pull this out if I need to take hits and melee)
                  Weapon - Bone Knife
Head - Carapace Mask (I'd get Raptor, but it looks horrible on Galka)
Body, hands, legs, and feet - Raptor X armor
                  Rest is the same

Honestly, most races aren't going to be able to come near then amount of MP I have, simply because of RSE and the Desert Stone. I also give up a lot of defense in my mage gear, but I rarely get hit and have a bunch of HP anyway, so it doesn't really matter. My chr is also low, but I could easily jump it several points if I wished and needed to with 49 mp loss.

Ok, looked around at AH last night and bought Electrum Hairpin + 1 Electrum Ring.

I was going to buy a corsette +1, but they we're all sold out.

I see the Galkan RSE gives +96 MP

So, that's the huge bridge. What does the Desert Stone do? It isn't on allakhazam's website.. I see Desert Rope at lvl 70 +60 MP. Are there any Hume only items like this?

Desert Stone is one of the level 50 belts. It gives +40 mp, +3cha, and some other stuff.

Hume items like this? There are, but its not the same thing. The RSE gear, level 50 belts, and level 70 belts try to upgrade what your race is weak in. Galka are weak in MP, so the RSE gear has lots of MP, the level 50 mage belt has lots of mp, and the level 70 mage belt has lots of mp.

Those items are partially why I went Galka. MP sucks for any non-mage/mage combo, whatever the race. Its easier for Galka to offset that terrible MP than other races IMHO, and I get a bunch of HP to boot.
