I was just curious who will be using an out-of-the-ordinary race/class combo, like me (Elvaan black mage). im curious to see what they are and how many people are doing this.

Elvaan WHM. It's not that extraordinary but elvaans just have less mp (still more then galka's). Anyway, I'm gonna supliment the mp loss with a SMN sub, that is; if S-E will ever release the damn game(and sony the damn HDD)
I think I'm beginning to understand. An answer from the planet...The Promised Land...

and pleeeeeeaaaase no galka mages ok? it's very very very rude and inconsiderate, in a vaguely indirect method. When you join a party, you're technically dooming them to a bad experience

It's not rude at all. Everyone should be able to try any job they want. You can always cover your weak point with something, and everyone in the party can cooperate and cover it too.

I like taru mages, but some taru mages just keep casting magic non-stop and don't even think about controlling hate. It all depends on skill of the player.

Your PT could really use some of that extra healing, not to mention galka mages can't cast raise when they get it at level 25 because they don't have enough MP...
Also, on a more angsty note...
This thread has been pretty clean so far, but with the name of the topic and all, someone's bound to post the most ridiculous combo and talk about how sweet it is (eventually). People would give advice, but I doubt they would be accepted (whenever someone decides on a stupid combo, it becomes like their penis or something; they refuse to admit how small and worthless it is)...
I'm not saying that any of the combos listed so far is a stupid combo, but that's just the general attitude of people on this board when they "ask for advice." Usually, it's more like "if you disagree with me, you're wrong and i'm right because all you speak of is from game experience which is nothing compared to my 133tn3ss."
Generally speaking, when it comes to FFXI's job combos, uniqueness is, i'm sorry to say, not good. When you buy a gun, you want a gun that does what it does really good, which is shoot bullets. If you could choose one add-on, it would be to increase the accuracy, damage, add a scope, etc. These so-called "unique combos" would be like modifying a gun so that it can also cook pizza. While it's nice and cool that you can make pizza, when people want to pick a gun, they'll pick the one that's a better gun, not a pizza oven. If they wanted pizza, they'd get an actual pizza oven.
When people say from experience that your combo sucks, they're not saying that you can't play it. Sure, u can play it, it's you're freedom. You can have fun with it, but that doesn't change the fact that it sucks. A buttload of arguing and comments about the other person's mother isn't going to make it not suck.
Sorry if this seems a bit random. No one's done anything wrong on this thread yet, but I just felt that this topic of "Weird Combos" would be the best place to post this message. This was mainly sparked up by those people who keep talking about "DRK/PLD," "BLM/WAR," or "PLD/DRK~MNK" or PLD/<anything other than WAR (or WHM for taru)>, but isn't limited to just them.
Basically, if you really want feedback and help in planning your character, then post away. However, if you just want people to tell you "You're a genius, I can't believe no one's ever tried that before," don't even bother posting it online for others to see, because it ain't gonna happen. You won't be seeing "genius combo" and "unique" in the same sentence, at least from anyone credible.

Awtawn, i would like to clarify a few things, if it helps. my original intention of this post was not to see the unique job/subjob combos people will have (as there are countless ones of those) but more to see who will choose a class not common to their race. as i have heard from a number of people, race tends to become pretty obselete as you progress, since any weaknesses your race has can generally be augmented with equipment (i dont have the game, so i cant verify that though). sure, your reasoning is logical if say,you decide to become a Black mage/dragoon, as a dragoon really has nothing to benefit to your black mage, but with the case of, say, and elvaan summoner/white mage, it may not "suck." to give another analogy along with your gun one. of course adding a pizza oven to your gun is ridiculus as the gun really does not benefit in any way. However, The person holding the gun may or may not be terribly effective with it. in that situation, people learn to adapt to their weaknesses and thereby developing a skill with there gun, or they put add-ons that make up for there weaknesses. Also, no race only has weaknesses. so, for instance, The person who is effective with a gun may only have 50 bullets, where the not so skillled person may have 100 bullets, or he may have a bullet-proof vest that the other race doesnt have. so, to conclude, once again i would like to point out that this thread is intended as a race/ class combo, not job/subjob combo."No matter how good it is for the body, unsavory food just isnt good for the soul."-Maysoon, culinarian in Windurst
