First Race/Job help

Ive never played the game and i get to play it for the first time on the ps2 on christmas day! yay

I really like monks and summoners in particular, do you reccomend a certain race? Or do you think that this is dumb to do? Because the whole job/subjob confuses the hell out of me and i really dont understand the benefits pros/cons.. Ive read as much as i can but i guess you cant understand it until you play the game.

Like most MMOs, FFXI places specific statistics and attributes in a more favourable manner for each of the five races. However, because of the job change system employed in FFXI, job/race choice provides for a more flexible and enjoyable experience.

You said that you're interested in jobs like MNK and SMN. If you're asking if it's wise to use those jobs in a single combo, I'd say it's a very bad idea. However, the job change system in FFXI allows you to play any jobs you'd like however much you'd like. You can simply change your main job and support job at any time.

When I think of MNK, I immediately think Elvaan. Elvaan are fairly dexterous and extremely powerful fighters. Their high Strength is the most obvious attribute when playing a melee job such as MNK. Other ideal jobs would be Galka or Hume.

SMN, unlike MNK, is a mage-type job, which places interest in high MP. Unfortunately, Elvaan aren't known for their high MP. If you're looking to have an ideal Summoner, Tarutaru is your best bet, with Mithra and Hume falling right behind. Elvaan make very decent Summoners because their MP count isn't drastically terrible, but Galkas are usually considered the "stay away from" race for any mage-type job.

However, my statements are all based on statistics. Yes, Elvaan have the most STR and Tarutaru have the most MP. However, because the job system is so flexible, it allows you to do whatever you want if you're looking to play more than one class. For example, my focus is Warrior, but I'm a Tarutaru. I don't really care that Tarutaru have terribly low HP, STR and VIT. I love Tarutarus, I love Warrior, and I love playing a Tarutaru Warrior. However, I also play White Mage, which is a very good choice for Tarutaru.

If you're looking to play jobs like MNK and SMN, just do whatever the heck you want. However, if you choose a less ideal race for your job choices, be sure to go that extra mile to get equipment that can help make up for your race's natural lack of attributes in any field.

But, in the end, just have fun, and choose whatever you'd like to do the most. (Tarutaru Monks are just so cool, you know?)

The way i understood the job system was that you would lose all exp in that job after you changed it. for example if you were a blm/whm and became a smn/whm i thought ud lose all ur blm exp. However the way you explain it it seems to me that you can go back to beng a blm with the same exp any time you want?

I love tarutarus!! THEY SO CUTE! I wanted to start out as a Taru Male Monk and later be a SMN/Monk taru cuz omgomgomg tarus are just so cool looking.. oh and they are tiny lol.. so i want to fight huge mobs with a tiny taru loL *Dies irl from laughing..*

Btw my friend plays ffxi but quit and has 1mil on his char and said hed give it to me. SO im assuming 1mil gil is a lot of gil.. but iunno

so with 1mil gil do you think i could be a decent taru monk in the beginning and then later on be a good smn/monk?

Yes, that is correct.

General rule of thumb: don't combine a melee job with a mage job. 99% of the time it won't work.

So no, MNK/SMN or SMN/MNK are generally big no-nos.

MNK's usual subjobs are MNK/WAR and MNK/THF.

SMN's usual subjob is SMN/WHM.

1. No, you don't lose any job exp, say you switched from monk30 to warrior 1, and whenever you decide to switch back, your monk will still be lv30.

2. I want to break the "rulebook of job combo" but apparently, you have to go with the combo that you can get party with, so basically what Pounce said.

3. 1mil won't get you too far, considering the price pump these days, but you will have a long time not having to worry about money.(around lv40, monk will need a few mil to support the best gears, though it's not a must, but if you want to show off =p)

4. You don't need to heal them, not that you can(from what I heard), you can always resummon them if they died... SMN's role is basically, everything... from nuking, debuff to healing and buff, SMN has to do all the mage's job, and since we can skillchain with avatar now, some party will ask you to skillchain as well... >_>;; so SMN/WHM is the best combo, the only combo that can really let you spend that massive pool of MP effectively.

Theif/Ninja is good cause you can use Utsemi to cover you from attack while ya pull, and duel weild is... sexah~ @.@

Theif/ranger is pretty coo because you can dish out massive damage and not be late for a renkie ^^

like Pai-pai is trying to say is, melee/mage classes is bad for exp PTs, cause if your going to be a melee at least leave the mage part to the mages lol.

1. you Only Have one when u start, u have to get thae rest later
2. No you Cannot Heal them..( However, u can re-summon them.theyll have full HP) ^^

Well, Xodia, if he is doing MNK, 1mil won't help much at the pumped market now, especially when everyone demands MNK to have all the neat gears most of the time ; if you include the money he spent on his 1-34 levels(including subjob leveling), he probably would only be able to afford a pair of Ochiudo Kote at 34(if he's lucky).... which is what I meant... so whether or not it's wrong is hard to judge the inflatted market makes 1mil look like 10k these days...

Just to add to Xodia's aeon/avatar explanation(they are officially called avatar here in FFXI):
You have Carbuncle as the default avatar... then you do several quests for the ifrit, and such... for example, you get ifrit via the trial by fire, and shiva via the trial by ice... the quest involve a battle which we normally called 'Avatar battle', basically its a battle against the avatar you are getting, for the normal 'Trial by <element>', you will need a lv60 party of normal setup(you will learn that when you played, basically 3 mages 3 melee).

Alternately, you can take the 'Mini-avatar battle' at lv20 SMN, the condition is, you will be entering the battlefield as a lv20 SMN, you can only summon carbuncle regardless of what avatar you have attained, and you have to solo this one... it is quite hard from what I heard, you will need a few potions and drinks, plus some background research on how to beat the avatar boss.

Both 'mini avatar battle' and 'avatar battle' will get you: Ifrit, Shiva, Ramuh, Leviantha, Garuda, and Titan.... the difference between them is, mini is extremely hard, since you have to solo with only carbuncle; normal avatar battle takes longer time, as you have to have a lv50 job(not necessarily SMN) to get a party for you to leech(assuming you can find people willing to let you leech, if not, you will have to be lv60 to take part in one, I guess?)

Fenrir on the other hand.. can only be obtained via 'avatar battle', and I heard it's harder than the 6 avatars above...

( you should have a mage job RDY for when u complete quest)..i really didnt find SMN ALL that fun but it is pretty interesting and fun to show off at new ppl lol jk..(ot really rofl)..so, Have Fun.. Well the only ff games i have played is ffx! And i loved YUNA!!!! Yuna was the coolest summoner ever..

Yuna is the only reason i wanna be a summoner. In any other mmorpg i usually am a monk or a mage. I guess ill just start out white mage and then see how it goes from there. And I cant wait to be a taru! DAY SO COOOL Lookn and so tall lmao

Yay i ganked my friends ps2 and the HDD works on his ps2 so i set up my acc and stuff now its updating.. and.. 2 hrs later
