armor and weapons?

I am still new to FF11 and i go to the Ah and see alot of armor and weapons that have a +1 with them. I was just wondering how you do this to a piece of armor or weapon. Sorry if this seems like a dumb question but i have read the game manual and it said nothing of this so now i am asking you. Thank you.

+1 Items are High Quality versions of those items created during synthesis. These items are more difficult to synthesize and typically require substantially more skill than the base item requires in order to be synthed with any frequency.
