You'll be able to buy them when you're rank 3, and they don't really help that much.WHM 75 | BLM 37 | RDM 63 | WAR 75 | MNK 44 | NIN 37 | RNG 20
Windurst Rank 10 | Bastok Rank 10 | Sandoria Rank 3
No more permanent stats on "In areas outside own nation's control" items.
Combat Caster's Boomberang +1 | Master Caster's Bracelets
Sandoria is gay.
I'm a warrior and I kill stuff! RAWR!

Re: are the starting rings really worth it?
??? I don't understand what you mean by one of you not getting the ring. Do you mean a particular ring? Each person gets the ring of his/her country he/she signs in free (yeah, u most likely already know that).Originally posted by FinalCross21

I reccomend staying in the same country. My n00b expereince may vary from yours, but I remember that it took a LONG time before I could even reach another country. I didn't know the way, it took a long time, and there was danger of gobs killing me everywhere. I couldn't travel safely to San D'oria from Bastok until I was about maybe 13-15'ish.
Good luck and have fun playing! Send me a tell if you manage to get on Bahamut and plan accordingly with World passes! ^^34 WAR, 11 RNG, 18 MNK, 13 WHM, 31 SAM, 10 NIN, 63 DRG, 15 PLD, 11 THF, 25 RDM
Rank 6
Genkai 1 hated and completed ^_^
Genkai 2 feared and completed ^_^
Genkai 3 annoyed but completed ^_^
Genkai 4 still on to-do list
AF1 series completed! Shouts go out to Kuno, MysticAery, Animasoul and everyone else that's helped! Thank you all! ^^

Well initially it helps out to have the ring since you get various boosts for free (Defense & some minor stat boosts). Yes you supercede it later, and yes you can buy it later (Rank 3 which is 4000 CP). However you can use it for lvling subs & the like and keep that 4000 CP or invest that CP into gil which can be close to 12-15k depending on server/market values/town.
In part at lvl 1 w/ no sub & no money a free piece of armor that boosts your stats is a nice addition to any arsenal and one worth considering.NM Record:
Leaping lizzy 0/3
Spook 1/3
Crypt Ghost 1/3
Juu Duzu The Whirlwind 2/2
Vuu Puqu The Beguiler 2/2
Stinging Sophie 0/3
Tumbling Truffle 0/1
Jaggedy Eared Jack 0/1
Thousandarms Deshglesh 2/2
Orcish Wallbreacher 0/1
Orcish Barricader 0/1
Hundredscar Hajwaj 1/1
Doppelganger Dio 1/1
Doppelganger Gog 1/1
Bomb King 1/1
Ash Dragon - Got a screenshot before I died if that counts ^^

He means the rings you get for choosing a certain race in a specific nation, like taru and mithra get the windy ring, hume and galka get the bastok ring, and elvaan get the sandy ring. all provided they start in their respective nations. but yes, once you get rank3 and your nation is in first place you can get your nations ring, it's something i'm considering doing except by the time i ever do switch nations i'll have all my jobs above 14 and won't want the starter rings, but i do find my windy ring useful for low level melees for the +agi and for my rdm and smn +int and +mp

YES!!! the rings are very worth it, as Desmar said, a free piece of armor that boosts stats at level 1 is always welcome in my book. I'd suggest starting in ur native cities, then joining up in a different city.Ohh, how I look forward to a steady job in which i can support my Final Fantasy XI addiction once more...

Not worth it..
Lets say you are a galka and your friend mithra.
If you start in Bastok you will get the ring. You travel to Windurst to party with your friend (Your first problem is to get there)
When there your signet will run out, no CP or crystals
Crystals is a very good money maker at lower levels and you need CP to buy some armors without spending gil.
If you as a Galka start in windurst you wont get the ring but you can get signet there, make alot of money and buy more/better equipment than the ring.Colossal lance, Optical hat, Mermans gorget, Assault earring, Coral earring, Assault jerkin, Drachen fng. gnt., Ruby ring x2, Forager's mantle, Life belt, Barone cosciales, Barone Gambieras
+Full JSE, Wyrm Brais, Forest rope
Leathercraft: 90+1
San d'Oria Rank 10
Windurst Rank 9
Sky, Moon & Lufaise Meadows O

The rings make a big difference early on when you've just started the game with no sub-job, or are between lvl 1-15. But after getting a sub, the rings are pretty useless since better alternatives are available, given you can afford them.

1.
The rings /are/ fantastic lvl 1 equip and if you can get them, do. I'm sick of people saying that "they aren't worth it". Thats bunk. The first decent rings you get are at 14, and even then aren't as good as the san dorian ring I'm using now. Keep in mind though, if you get to 36 and you're still using your nation's ring, you're doing something wrong.
2.
It is /not/ worth the hassle of raising a character in a nation not your own.
These two things make choosing race and nation both important and difficult at the beginning of the game, and I wish Squeenix would adjust this.
What I would do is figure out between the two of you which of your jobs and races most closely aligns with the stats on the rings, and choose your nation accordingly. Whoever doesn't get the ring can buy it later with CP, at level 20-25.
