  • question about Taru's

Okay, my friend recently decided that he wants to start playing FFXI. Today after school I am going to call him and give him all the info on jobs/subs and stuff. I showed him some screenshots of the game and when he saw Taru, he said he HAD to be one. The only thing is, he doesn't like playing magic based characters. He said he MIGHT be able to be a Hume, but we'll see. This guy also likes to not be normal, stand out in video games, so he's wondering about odd job/sub combos to take. Not really odd, just ones that don't work to well.

So my question is, he is wanting to play a character that is a tank or support attacker. But he wants to play it as a Taru Taru. Are there any good job/sub combos that work well with Taru's NOT involving magic casting? He said it would be okay to sub a magic job tho. He's mostly looking at WAR, PLD, RNG, DRG, SAM, and NIN. It'd be really cool if you guys could help me out with this one.
Ohh, how I look forward to a steady job in which i can support my Final Fantasy XI addiction once more...

all i know and it isnt alot is...a tarutaru is weaker against attacks than ur other races..with that in mind the whole magic thing would be best for that race..cuz of all the mp...but hell i see tarutarus as war...its funny looking and im sure they do fine as it is..and as far as mixing jobs up...u can do somethin off the wall but be warned that alot of pts prolly wont invite u ..than if u had 2 jobs that went together..but thats just what i been collecting from my readings on these forums...just thought id reply to u ..since noone else has yet.. gl to ya
    well...blow me down

Actually, tarus make one of the better THF's in the game, behind mithra. So if he wants to be an attacker with his taru, he could be THF. You mentioned that NIN appealed to him. Well NIN is the best sub for THF. However, pretty much everybody that plays THF is going to have NIN subbed. So he wont stand out much. But, any race can play any job in this game and still be pretty good at it, you just have to get better equipment and have better equipment throughout the game. I have seen plenty of taru WAR's and DRK's and DRG's. They are all pretty decent, they just have to work harder. And about picking a sub that doesnt work to well; tell him to stay away from it. Partys are not going to want a THF/SMN or some crazy combo like that. Other than not getting invites, the jobs will not work together at all, and it will not be fun for your friend. So if he wants to stand out, tell him to do that on his own time, when hes soloing or something. Don't bring your wierd combos to partys, just not a good idea. I think he will like THF/NIN anyway. Duel wield is very cool, and THF is a very fun and one of the most damaging jobs to play.:spin:
      DRK 25 / WAR 30 / THF 25 / MNK 19

Bah i say your friend just plays what he wants to. Or plays all the classes to lvl 10 and see what he likes.

Yes there are job that go well together, but you never know he might discover something new and interesting.

I think if he has a good steady group of friends around him, he will never have problems getting up there. I think this game is based on the friends you make not the jobs you take. But in the end he will have to have his friends or linkshell around him to be different.

Like what was said before not every job goes together lol.

        Tell him good luck.

        And Taru Tarus rule.

Tarutarus are natural born magic users. We pocess the highest INT and MP of all player races. However the trade off is that we have the lowest VIT, thus we get criticals (on us) more often, and the lowest HP just makes things worse.

This does not mean Tarutaru cannot be melees, just that you will have to work harder to get gears that will somewhat compensate our short comings.

If your friend is going melee as a Tarutaru, I'd probably say aim for paladin. As a warrior, all the strength of Tarutaru is wasted, but as PLD, the huge MP pool a Taru has helps. You just need some nice DEF and HP items so you don't fall to STDS (sudden taru death syndrome).

              Coming from a Taru

If he wants to be a tank...

Palidin//War would be best, he can use his magic to his advantage of tanking and healing himself at the same time...Just my oppinion.

If you wan't to join my server I can help you guys out (Diabolos) but it's a big japanese server...

I went over to his house tonight and here are his plans. He's going to start out as a WHM till level 18 or 30, depending on how much he likes the job. And he's probably going to sub BLM. At some point he plans on subbing THF for some levels, at the same time I do, so we can rake in some major cash. Then if he still feels like tanking, then we're going to go do the PLD quests together just in case I ever feel like going PLD. I'm planning on alternating from RNG/NIN to DRK/WAR in different situations.

In the end, he wants to end up as a high level PLD/WHM. Because he could keep the hate off me, and try and tank as much as a Taru is allowed, and still be a "fighter type" class and do regular damage. Although, the more I talk about magic, the more he gets into it, maybe he'll be a WHM/BLM for awhile:spin:

Also, Moulso, we just might take you up on your offer to join Diabolos!!!

If he is going to hold Hate he needs provoke = \

But I do agree that you w/ elven would make a good rng//nin and DRK//war (or DRK//thf imo =) )

PLD//WHM is good for taru but in the end it is kinda pointless, I do not mean to be negative at all but a PLD that can't provoke or keep hate is kind of pointless, But he could always be a Healer ina party...So it works out to some extent =)
