I first started the game as a Warrior, hoping to progress along the path to a PAL\WAR. However, now, at level 15 WAR, I must say that I HATE pulling. In my understanding, Paladins are the class that does this. I like taunting and taking damage well enough, but pulling is just not my thing at all. Neither is leading the party.
So, I came to the conclusion I wanted to be a support physical damage dealing class. This would include NIN, SAM, DRK, DRG, MNK, RNG, maybe THF, and probably another I'm forgetting. NINs are not my thing either, because to be really desirable, you need expensive blink pouches. The same goes for RNG--I don't want to have to hunt down items and sell them before I can join monster-killing party.
I don't enjoy Monk. I find them sort of boring and I don't like the concept of attacking without a hugeass weapon. Samurai's AF looks kind of odd. Basically it's the helmet that bugs me. When I get past that, the class as a whole just seems a little boring. Lots of weaponskills, but I don't find that too exciting. Also, I have no idea how desirable they are in HNM or EXP hunts. I know that I never click on "Samurai" in my Search window at least. THF is definitely not my style unless its a subjob.
Finally we come to DRG and DRK. It seems as though DRGS can do comparable damage to DRKs. Their weapons are usually about a second faster, their Pentathrust renkeis with THF, AND they have the Wyvern doing half their damage again. Wouldn't this let them do MORE damage than your average DRK? Then when they do a little too much damage and get aggroed, they just Jump it off. How bad is the defense compared to a DRK? They can't wear the armor that DRKs can. However, I never see anybody really seeking a DRG for their party either.
DRK is really what I'd like to be, but I heard that you die alot, have aggro problems, and noone will want you in their party. I heard they're the most desired for HNM battles, correct? But you have to get to a nice HNM-fighting level first, meaning you need invites. Are DRK's spells fun or useful? How is their defense compared to a PLD? Say a PLD takes 200 damage at level 60. How much would a DRK take? DRKs also have a wide range of subs, from the standard THF and WAR, to the weird BLM and RDM, to the insane DRK\SAM.
Speaking of the Samurai sub, do DRKs and DRGs have EXTREME aggro problems when subbing this? It seems like it would draw an absolutely crazy amount of it. Can anyone help me out in my dilemma as to what melee class to choose? I have about 14 levels of WAR and 15 of THF until I have to decide. But I'm training scythe and combat skills now, so training DRG skills early would be nice if I do indeed choose them.
Ah, one more thing. The level 70 DRG JSE is incredible, with +10 all resists. What endgame items can the DRK get other than the crappy Balmung sword?
