I just recently completed Mission 4-1 (applause)...but I did encounter undue trouble on the Castle Oztroja wing of it. Every source that I know to look at was very vague in it's description of how to get to the frickin' Magicite. So, in an effort to make your trip easier than mine, here are the exact directions on how to navigate Castle Oztroja.
When you first enter, head left, then make your first right. You should be walking along the left wall of the huge open area...keep going along that wall into the room straight ahead of you. Make the first left to get to the door at (I-8)...NOT (J-8). Not that big a deal, but just to clarify
Click a lever and move out of the way very fast...that trap door is annoying. Go through the door (and sneak/invis more later) and follow the path until you come to an intersection -- go right. Then go straight at the next intersection...just follow the big huge path that you're currently in. You'll come to the second floor of a big open area (but under the roof of the castle still). Go right (it's the only direction you can go, actually).
Follow that path til you get outside..head north and enter back into the castle. Make the next available right. Then just keep heading straight along the big fat path until you reach the door with the torches...
Here is the only time you'll HAVE to be seen by an enemy - and that enemy is a Yagudo Prior (black mage) which is Even Match to a level 45 character and a Yagudo Interceptor (SAM capable of triple attack) which is Decent Challenge to a 45 character. If you're in a tight party with no high levelers silence and kill the Prior first. Sleep the Interceptor if you can. Once through the door, sneak/invis (I think just invis...don't remember seein' any bats) and head right. Once you get to the big door you're home free.
------------End Directions------Start My Strategies----------------
I can't say when you need sneak though...just play it by ear; if the bats con easy prey to you, use sneak. Invisible is a must on this if you don't want to fight everything on the way down (everything from easy prey -> tough to a level 45 character).
I did this leg of the mission with myself (45BRD/22WHM) and a 44RDM/NIN. If you are near my level and want to do this with a skin and bones party like I did, you MUST have someone who can sleep the enemy reliably. We barely made it through the two enemies alive, and we would have died had I not been able to sleep the Interceptor.
I think that's about it. Hope this helps people with this mission!
