  • FFXI not starting up

I have a problem starting FFXI. When I try to open the game from PlayOnline, PlayOnline closes but instead of running FFXI, it reopens without giving me an error message.

I have installed FFXI and expansions up to ToAU and updated them.
I am using Vista home premium on a laptop. I can play other games such as World of Warcraft just fine.
I have also tried the official benchmark, but it closes a few seconds after it starts.

Any serious help would be appreciated
    Thanks in advance.

What other games have you installed. Also check to see if your drivers are up to date.

There's software for PlayOnline specifically for Vista. It can be found at playonline.com if you haven't already located it and installed it.

          Re: FFXI not starting up

Uninstall the game completely. Go to PlayOnline.com and follow the instructions EXACTLY on how to install the game for computers with the Vista OS. If you do not follow it exactly and install the components in the correct order the game will not work correctly.

            Re: FFXI not starting up

That's not entirely true. When I got my new computer, I used the cds to install Playonline, so when I tried to open it wasn't compatible with Vista. All I had to do to fix this was uninstall only Playonline and then download the Vista compatible version on the Square Enix site and install that.

If it still doesn't load, instead of re-installing the game, when you open Playonline, there's a verify files button before you log in. Use that and it will find and fix any existing problems there may be in the game's files.

              Re: FFXI not starting up

Many people who have installation issues are not very computer savvy. Telling them to reinstall following the directions from the official site is the easiest way for them. It saves them a lot of time and headaches in the long run.

                Re: FFXI not starting up

Ok, I reinstalled everything and it now it it opens, but now I am having this problem.

The game runs very smoothly and everything else shows up fine like the walls.
I've tried checking the files with PlayOnline but it didn't find any errors.
I tried changing the settings in Final Fantasy XI Config.
I know my drivers are up to date also.

Anyone know what could be causing this?

                  Re: FFXI not starting up

Well its definately graphic issues and as long as your card is fairly new, its probably drivers. Sometimes you have to fiddle with the drivers to get them to work right. Sometimes the most up to date drivers don't work as well with FFXI as an older version does. So you may have to downgrade. Also check into beta driver versions, sometimes (personally I belive most of the time) unofficial drivers are better so check into it. Ya its a royal pain and I sympathize but this is something you are going to have to fiddle with on your end. I'd look some drivers up for you but this old lady is beat and going to hit the hay soon.
