  • FFXI updating issues in Vista - POL-1161

    I've just installed POL (downloaded from pol site) and installed it along with the expansions fine. I managed to update POL fine too. When I try to start the game, it says I have to update the files. But then I get "version update communication error" POL-1161 after the preparing update screen. It doesn't even get to download the files.

    There is no issue with my internet at all. I have managed to download other stuff fine. Anyway I thought it was my router so I went and connected an ADSL 1 modem which connects directly to the net. It still generated the same message.

    I believe its a Vista setting but I am just speculating at this point. I have turned off firewall, Anti virus, done port forwarding (when I had router), turned on UPNP etc but to no avail..

    I am using Vista 32 ultimate edition.

    I just installed FFXI on my parents PC (XP) and it seems to update fine but I don't really wanna use that PC -_-

    Stupid Vista..

    Hey, I recently had the same issue when I purchased the game again. This is how I fixed it.

    Right click on the playonline.exe shortcut and go to the Compatibility tab. Check the box that says "Run this program as an administrator". Hit Apply>Okay. Then boot up the program and let me know if it works.

        Hmm, strange. I was having the same issue on my desktop and laptop. I got it working by setting it as an administrator. Playonline can be very buggy at times.

            Isn't Windows Vista an awesome OS for Gaming?

            </sarcasm>

            Have you tried calling the SE Tech help? They will probably be useless, but it can't hurt.

                my little brother had the same issue - it had to do with something called DMZs on his router, I can't post a link, but if you google it, you should find the blurb about DMZ...

                Good Luck!

                    OK, so I am/was having this same issue too. I tried running as administrator when I right-clicked on the shortcut and it didn't work. I then right-clicked and went to properties. In properties I choose the Shortcut Tab and went to Adanced and checked the "Run as administrator" option to allow the shortcut to be run as admin and I also went to the Compatibility tab and checked the box "run this program in compatibility mode for" and it had a ddl, I chose Windows XP Service Pack 2. I also checked the box labeled "Run this program as an administrator" under privilege level.

                    As of right now it has solved the problem w/o any rebooting. If this changes I will post. I suggest trying these options if you are having this same problem.

                    Hope it works!

                    p.s. - I did not do anything w/ the DMZ settings.
