  • Cannot start the game

    Hi,

I bought the collection 2007 for PC, installed everything, double clicked PlayOnline icon.
I get PlayOnline Viewer for a second, and nothing happens.
When I installed the game, I disabled ZoneAlarm as recommended by the installation guide. Has anyone had this problem? I need HELP!!!

What OS are you running? If you are on Vista you will have to download a special POL from playonline.com.

I am at work, so I am WebSensed from providing you a link.

      Thanks for the quick response.

I'm running Windows XP. I uninstall and reinstall the game several times, but no luck. No error messages.
I installed latest ATI driver, but still no luck.

        Re: Cannot start the game

I have the EXACT SAME PROBLEM. Someone please shed some light on this, I beg of you. It's driving me crazy.

I am running Windows XP Pro. I also bought the 2007 collection. However, I bought the game because I when initially downloaded and installed the 14-day trial version, I couldn't get POL Viewer to start. I get the same problem no matter what I try. The same thing with the free trial version, the 2007 collection version, and the Vista-compatible version downloadable from the official POL website.

Here is the specific problem described in detail to the best of my ability:

The POL Viewer(and Tetra Master along with it) installs beautifully without any problems, at least nothing noticeable on the surface whatsoever. However, whenever you try to start the POL Viewer, regardless of which executable you run(pol.exe, polboot.exe, or startpol.exe), it fails. Each and every time, you see the application attempting to run, then within about 5 seconds, it disappears and nothing happens. During the attempted startup, if it is set to run in windowed mode, it will pop a blank window(similar to what you get when you run command prompt, except without any text or anything else other than complete blank blackness) with "PlayOnline Viewer" plus version number in the title bar. If you set it to run in full screen mode, you will get a completely black screen. Then after a second you will get a mouse pointer in the form of an hourglass(but visually different from the hourglass that is seen normally in the Windows environment that indicates the CPU is busy). In either case, everything disappears completely in about 5 seconds or so. You are returned your desktop with everything else running fine as before, but it's as if you never ran the POL Viewer. No error message, nothing.

I have tried everything I could possibly think of. Fully formatted my hard drive the slow way(physical disk check) and did a fresh OS install just in case. Tried installing and running POL Viewer logged on as the actual "administrator." Opened all the TCP/UDP ports needed on my router along with the Windows Firewall exception. When that didn't work, even tried putting my PC in DMZ with firewall turned off. Also went into regedit and gave full rights to all users and user groups on the entire playonline directory(in local machine -> software).

Nothing works. The worst part is that there isn't even so much as an error message. And without a way to register a POL account, I can't even send in a formal tech support e-mail due to lack of a POL ID.

If anyone knows anything about this, please be so kind to share your awesome knowledge. It would be most appreciated. Thank you.

This was what happened to me.

I was running non-English version of OS. This meant that the "location" in Regional and Language Options were set to other country instead of United States. I changed the location back to United States, and everything was okay. I was able to run the game without any problem on non-English version of OS.
Let me know if this helped.

There is no rush. If you're not willing to take your time, don't be surprised when no one wants to give you much of theirs.
