    Thinking about upgrading my PC for graphics

    Hello folks. I've been toying around with how FFXI looks and performs on my PC by toying around with graphics settings. The FPS drops and things get really choppy on some higher settings, so I was pondering making some upgrades. Here's what I currently have.

    Gateway GT4024 desktop
    Processor: Intel Pentium D 805 2.66 GHz (shows up as Pentium 4 in system info) Dual-core 64-bit, 533 MHz FBS
    RAM: 1 GB
    Video: ATI Radeon Xpress 200 integrated, 128 MB shared memory
    Expansion slot: PCI Express x16

    So my question is, what should I bother upgrading? The integrated video sticks out to me. At the very least, moving to a card with its own memory would free up that chunk of RAM being taken out by the on-board graphics. I'm not exactly sure what I would upgrade to, though.

    The recommended hardware on the side of the box for FFXI mentions GeForce. Does it matter which brand, as long as they use the same GeForce processor?

    Is it even worth upgrading just the video card? I'd hate to spend 100 bucks or more on a video card and find out that something else on my system is holding it back.

    A new video card, but hold off on which one. Right now GeForce cards have problems (sometimes significant) with FFXI, but they are the current high performers on everything else. This might all change with Wings or shortly after, depending on if the DX9 update did make it in with Wings.

      A little bit of a bump. WotG has come, and no DX9 upgrade apparently. Have the issues with the newest GeForce cards been ironed out? Or should I just go for one from the 6000 series?

          Actually, I used to play on an MX440, which from everything I read was basically just a slightly enhanced GeForce 2.

          As to the card, I'd still say wait until DX9. We don't know how much of an upgrade it's going to be, and what's going to change. What card can make FFXI prettiest for the lowest price now could be sluggish on maximum settings in a few months.

            Agree with both of them, for now wait on that card until we see what DX9 will do to FFXI, but if you want to get one thing out of the way, get another GB of RAM. Not needed 100%, but extra RAM (specially when you have integrated graphics) is nice.

                I run dual cards and I have no issue with Nivida playing FFXI.

                Nin75, Bst75. Drk61, War61, Rdm40, All other jobs are 37. All 3 starting city missions completed. All Zilart missions completed. All CoP missions completed. TouA completed.
