FFXI crashes upon login

For some reason, the game crashes when I login on my main character. However, when I login on my mule, the game runs fine. I'm a bit confused........maybe the area has something to do with it? Currently in Port Jeuno on main.

Running it right now. What do you think it is? Corrupted file that controls a piece of gear i'm wearing or something?

It would crash if there is a file missing, from what I heard.

If it's a simple .dat switch for visual purposes, it should NOT crash.

dat switches usually don't crash, but missing dats do. People used to remove darter .dats at fafnir to make claim easier, so SE made missing dats crash FFXI.

Well I haven't even touched the default FFXI files in months. I don't do dat swaps or any of that. Maybe a disk defragment went awry?

FFXI files become corrupted all the time. Don't worry about what caused it, just worry about fixing it.

For a quick test, have a trusted friend log onto your character from their computer and move it out of whatever area is causing trouble. This can sometimes allow you to log in.

Found 16 corrupted files, fixed all of them. Thanks guys! Forgot all about file check.

Glad to help. Good thing you could fix them too, a lot of times POL will force you to reinstall everything... because of one broken dat.

Strangely enough, one of the broken files was the animated cursor file that FF uses in game. For the past few weeks, I've been having all sorts of little problems with Vista. Services failing at random intervals, permissions getting set oddly, stuff like that. Don't know how it could have happened on my watch ; I don't run as admin unless I have to(UNIX security model Ftw!)

I Sudo. I really wish MS hadn't fucked it up so badly with UAC. I can just imagine two years from now, Windows users rejecting sudo as a less secure format of UAC. Of course, these are the same people that think Linux window managers are a Windows GUI ripoff, that the command line is horrible, and think Linux is a piece of crap because it's free. But still, it's the thought that counts.

My XP licence is expired and I'm too lazy to deal with the risks of downloading/cracking/whatevering a copy of XP. Someone get this thing to run in Wine and I'll send them a medal.

I actually kind of like Vista, aside from this recent catastrophe(I have a theory it was caused by a Windows patch). Aero resource usage isn't as high as its been claimed, and I must be the only person on Earth who doesn't think UAC is a problem.
