FFXI Won't Update

I have FFXI installed on my laptop and it won't update. Ill click play, then itll prompt me to update. It gets 25% through the first part of the update, and then freezes. I've tried to reinstall it, but nothing seems to work.

First off, what are the specs on your laptop?

Secondly, how are you connected to the net? I have problems from time to time due to being wirelessly connected...during this last huge update we had recently, I had to get a 50' ethernet cable and temporarily hard wire my desktop because my connection kept lagging just enough to kick me out of the update process.
Also, make sure there aren't any antivirus or other internet utilities running in the background that could be hindering the download. I've also run into problems where Norton pop's up asking if I want to allow a certain program to connect to the net...the main problem being that it sometimes pops up behind the main window so I can't see it, and to me it looks like it locked, when in reality Norton just stopped the process while waiting for me to confirm/deny.

Outside of all that, all I can really recommend is that you make sure your computer is clean of virus' and spyware, clean up your temp folder if you have't already done so, and check your startup config to make sure that there isn't a bunch of random crap starting up that you don't need. Laptop's are especially bad with this...my friend's Toshiba has 20 programs start up with windows that are completely useless and suck performance. I recommend CCleaner, it's a free program that works great, deletes temp files that windows likes to ignore, cleans up your registry, has a great startup config, and also has a much better add/remove programs utility than the one built in to windows. I noticed a BIG difference in performance after I ran that the first time...
