Error Code: FFXI-2003

I installed FFXI on my own computer with the three expansions, as part of the Vana Diel 2007 collection. After the very frustrating process of getting everything up and running, I decided to install it on my friend's computer and give him my buddy pass.

He got everything installed, downloaded the updates, created his character, used his world pass, and entered the world. However, when he enters the world, before any actual gaming occurs, I (he) get "Error Code: FFXI-2003" and then something about being unable to read the data. I assumed that perhaps the anti-virus software he was running messed up the updates. I uninstalled and reinstalled FFXI, after removing Norton (ugh) and Mcafee (ugh) and disabling all of the startup programs.

So far I probably have put about 10 hours into installing the game twice. I don't like World of Warcraft, but it installed in about 1 to 2 hours. I'm starting to get a little frustrated.

As a side note, the game tells me to install the Rise of the Zilart expansion or I might experience problems. I was under the impression that the buddy pass is only applicable to the core game, and note useable for the expansions?

Can anybody help me? Can anybody point me in the direction of anybody that can help me?

Try running the file check. Also, run scandisk and defrag on the hdd the game is installed onto, as it could be the problem w/ hdd.

In general, today's hdd's have average lifespan of 3 years, and after that, it's only dying slowly. Yes, they are expendable parts of computers. Further, if the same drive is used for file sharing programs such as torrents, then its lifespan will be a lot shorter; over-worked hdd could die in 6 months.

I checked the disk for errors, it seems to be fine. I never thought it was the hard drive anyway, or I would have tried it before. The computer has never given him any I/O errors before, and it's not doing anything weird other than the FFXI problem.

Do you think it would be a good idea to copy my FFXI files onto his hard drive?

The weird thing is, the files I used on my computer were not the "legal" copy. My computer for some reason couldn't read the disk, so I downloaded the game (and expansions). I used the ligitimate copy on his computer. Square didn't implement some sort of weird security feature that would cause problems with that, did they?

I dunno. I'm uber stuck and confused.

Copying the whole directory also copies your ID and Password (if you've set it to save them), so that should be the last resort, as we don't know what information is still saved even after you've changed them to that of your friend.

Collection 2007 is fairly new, and as you've thought it could be the problem w/ the disk. Aside from legal issues, I'd try using whatever the disks/data you used to install. And no, FFXI disks don't have any copy protections, or at least they didn't, and I don't see any reason why they add one to the newly released copy. It's already "protected" w/ registration keys to play.

i have the same problem with my installation of a legal copy of the 2007 vanadiel collection and after looking through forums on this topic, i haven't been able to find a resolution. i ran the benchmark and i did pretty well. ran file check and found no problems. this is a new computer so there shouldn't be any HD issues. i also disabled my antivirus software - to no avail unfortunately! if you guys have any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate them.

i dont know what could may be i unistalled mi av programs and reinstalled the game and the same i check the fix program that said 5 files were corrupted and still the same now it even says about the expasin rise of zilart weird thing couse before i cheked the "corrupted files" it didnt showed that messege i been searching in the web and no clear asnwer to this error its been given in here is where i put my hoppe willing that someone answers to this error and since its a new copy would you think it may be an error from the server or even from square enix? a new patch could been downloaded? or something

i called POL tech support and here's the fix:

so POL says the message concerns the installation. basically you should uninstall the entire game, then reinstall it. if you still get the error message, then you should reformat your hard drive, according to them.

i reinstalled and it worked. after i uninstalled, i defragged my hard drive again. when i reinstalled, i made sure antivirus wasn't running or any background apps that i thought would interfere.

btw i ran "check files" which i believe was in either pol config or ffxi config. the result was that all of my currently installed files were fine. but if anyone else is having error codes, i suggest running that in case it might discover the cause of your problems. can't hurt.

ok so it i see the defrag sutf and it seems that my drive had errors on it so i reformat the entire drive and installed it again this time i borrow the last year collection from a friend and then installed the new one and its ok i can play now in FFXI im new but i still get the error from the expansion of not beeing installed properly dont now why but at least i can play now
