When you move a HDD from one PS2 to another you need to reformat it with the HDD utility disc. The HDD is linked to each specific PS2, and that link is used by DNAS for authentication. It's the formatting process that does this.

As Ellipses says, just find the right tool for your platform, you should be fine. You need the HD formatting tool and a PC for this operation, as far as I know?

No PC required. There's a disc included with the PS2 HDD, HDD Utility Disc or something along those lines. It has error checking and formatting and such on it. Install the HDD, boot off that disc, format, then install FFXI.

Hmm. I guess I could be wrong on the reformat. That's what I've always heard, but Wikipedia might be right. You might ask SCEA (if you didn't already) whether they offer replacement Utility Discs.

Have you tried temporarily disconnecting the other PS2? That should let you know one way or the other whether having two PS2s on the same router is the problem (I really don't see why that would be the case, as that's kind of what routers are for).
