  • PS2 HDD troubles, please help

I recently purchased Final Fantasy XI for my PS2. I already own the game for Xbox 360, but my husband and I have been taking turns playing and taking turns isn't working out.

I was under the assumption that we already owned a HDD for our PS2, but I was wrong, and had to buy the HDD separately online. The problem is, it came without the utility disk. Does anyone know where I can get a PS2 hard drive utility disk without buying a whole other hard drive? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

The disk come only with the retail package HDD+FFXI. I dont know where you got your HDD but if its used make sure its a real ps2 HDD because thats the only way to pass DNAS authentification. Also you wont be able to play together if wont dont own 2 FFXI account and not just 2 character. So basicly you need a retail package for PS2 that is new.

So for your HDD i think you dont have many options.... You could try to find a copy online but still it wont boot on the PS2 without a modchip or something. You should invest in the original brand new HDD+FFXI Package.

Yes buying a used HDD is a huge risk. The codes could be invalid for the game and then you would have to hunt down another copy of the game and install it. Of course, you'd need the utility disk for this also in order to restore it.

Of course there are websites to help with not having the utility disk but you would have to have decent computer knowledge and be able to find the websites that can guide you.

I bought a copy of FFXI separate from the package deal, unopened, from someone who had never played it, so the codes are good, and I plan on starting a new character if I can get this to work. The HDD i bought is an authentic PS2 one, it has the logo and all. Unfortunately, I didn't know about the fact that the HDD needed to be formatted when being used in a different PS2.

I have already done a little research into downloading the utility online, but apparently if it's not the actual Sony utility, it will be considered a mod and then I won't be able to play anyway. At least, this is my understanding.

If anyone here has a copy of the disk, I would be willing to pay to have it sent to me so I can make this work. I'd send it back after I use it.

Re: PS2 HDD troubles, please help

I might have one, I'm moving into a house in about 6 days, and if I can find it I will check back here.

I'm not sure if they would consider it modding if you formatted the hardrive. DNAS just checks for hardware that isn't apart of the original PS2 setup and whatnot. That's why import things like Flip Tops and Swap magics work, they don't actually install hardware on the PS2, like a modchip.

If all the third party disc is doing is wiping the hard drive clean, I think it would be fine.

But I'll still look for mine, and let you know.

EDIT: I could also reccomend looking on like, gamestop.com or ebgames.com for a PS2 Hard drive too. They have one or two I'm sure.

Thanks Suichi, for your offer and for the advice. I've called a couple shops around town and none of them have a copy of the disk 'lying around.' That was the advice from Sony when I called them - "oh GameStop will have one lying around." Um no.

Re: PS2 HDD troubles, please help

There's like 5 Gamestops/EB Games in my area, lemme try calling em.

              Double Post Edited:
I called them, no luck, I'm sorry.

In about 6 or 7 days, when I get my stuff unpacked, I'll check for it. I know I have it, just not sure where.

Good news, I think. I got a hold of the guy I bought the hdd from and he said he will mail me the disc on Monday. So I'm crossing my fingers and hoping it works. Suichi, I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for the help, all of you.

Would a direct copy of the original disc work? Chveya, if you don't get the Disc the guy said he would said, I can make you a copy of mine. I know EXACTLY where mine is. I still have the original packaging! Let me know.

Re: PS2 HDD troubles, please help

I was asked to provide an update, so here goes:

I haven't gotten the disc in the mail yet, but I'm hoping it will come today. If not, its no biggie because I caved in and bought the whole FFXI package for PS2 from Amazon.com. It should arrive sometime this week. I've lost a sizeable amount of money (to me at least) in this venture, but hey, it was a learning experience!

Now I have to decide if I will be evil and try to sell that useless hdd on ebay... It could still be used for modding w/o the utility disk, right? Someone might be able to use it, and maybe I'll make some $$ back.
