POL/FFXI startup issues

Okay, so my POL/FFXI seems to have a rolling roulette of if it will work or not. I have two problems:

The first is the POL screen coming up, then just going away and returning to desktop.

Second is if POL does work, I press play on FFXI, the window goes dark and it just freezes up, and I have to ctrl-alt-del to shut it down.

The wierd thing is, on the rare occasion it works, it runs perfectly, no problems. I just have to restart again and again and see if I get lucky. Its failing to work more and more recently, though.

For reference, I've deleted all processes I can, still no luck.
