  • I have some router trouble.

My dad and I are trying to hook up our router to my ps2 (Wireless Router I may add). Last time we managed to configure the router but we didn't know we had to configure the reciever. Well my dad unhooked the router and so that means we had to re-configure it again.. This time we didn't even get past the configuration.. My dad did something wrong this time and we had no clue what he had done. He couldn't get the web browser to load so he went back and checked over and over.. We called Tech support and they couldn't help us.. So maybe one of you guys have the answers. We're using linux but I really don't think it matters.. But I know there's some sort of PC configuration in this.. and we also have SBC DSL if that helps..

Re: I have some router trouble.

Little hazzy on what the problem specifically is. Are you stating that when you have the DSL Modem hooked to the Router, and the Router going to the PC that you are not able to reach a website or use anything internet related? The links of this of course being all cable (Wireless not functional at the moment).

If your computer is hooked up to the Router have you checked your ipconfig to make sure you computer is being assigned an IP address? (If you are even doing a Dynamic Network, little detail on what the scheme of the network is). If it is not and you are unable to access the Router then have you tried resetting the router? Instructions to reset it back to factory default should be in the manual about the router, don't know what brand you have and my knowledge is kind of limited to more of the Cisco/Linksys brands.

I'm a bit confused still as to why a router would need to be re-configured again if you only powered it off or unplugged it from the network unless your network changed that drastically (Example router in question has the same IP as another device in a Static Network, even still easily solved by changing the other devices IP).

More detail about the process you did would be needed to try and fix this in one method, the other method that might be easier is just reset the router to factory defaults and you should be able to re-configure it again from that point.

Re: I have some router trouble.

Macht gave some good suggestions, and I have the same question. Why/how was the router reset from the old configs?

I would suggest reseting the DSL modem, and then reseting the router. For most of the Linksys routers the default configs will get the job done. They're not the best settings as far as security goes, but they will work.

Once you've done, make sure your PC is getting an IP address. /sbin/ifconfig will give you some information about the network interfaces that are configured. Make sure the interface has an IP address. From there try to ping some place in the internet. I always go with:

      ping www.yahoo.com

Provided it resolves the host, it should send traffic back and forth. Use a CTRL+c to end the process. Once you're there you should be able to access things via a web browser and your PS2 should be able to connect as well.

In a case like this, sounds like your router would be running a DHCP server so you'd set your PS2 and PCs to Dynamic IP selections. The router will provide them with an IP as well as name servers.

However, if the router doesn't appear to be doing it's job any more, you may have to reenable the DHCP server. Check the manual that came with it, or the docs in the HTML config tool.
