Ok, I logged on this morning to check out the new emotes, then logged off. When I logged in this afternoon when I got home I can't play. I keep getting this error. I called a GM in POL (yea, another example of GM's being useless) let's just say it was a waste of my time. He told me it has to be a 3rd party program taking priority over FFXI. Told me to do STARTmenu>RUN>msconfig>startup> unclick all.

Did so, restarted computer, tried to play, got same error. Called GM again, he just simply said "I've already given you directions on what to do." Then wouldn't tell me anything more. Please help me. ; ;

It shouldn't be any 3rd party program seeing as how all I have running is POL and Earthlink, which I alwasy have minimized and it's never affected the game before.

Are you sure you don't have any spyware or pop-up ads on your computer from surfing all that pr0n? j/k

Have you downloaded anything other than the latest update recently? Do you have the latest possible working drivers for your video card?

Ok I actually found a USEUFL GM. He says I have a virus, which McAffe did not pickup. He gave me a few site links. It's called "winlogin.exe" if you hit cntrl+alt+delete and go to proccesses you can see it.

And

http://housecall.antivirus.com/ scans your computer, this aswell found no virus. So winlogin.exe is running in the background, don't know how long it's been there, and this could be messing up FFXI. Can anyone tell me how to get RID of it?! (>.<);

I had this problem too, and it was really annoying because I was getting it a lot of times, randomly every 5 mins, 1h or 5h...

What I did was unclick everything on
STARTmenu>RUN>msconfig>startup>

And delete EVERYTHING that was in startup menu, fraps, messenger, all.

Then it got fixed.. I even had to turn off the drivers of my Logitech keyboard/mouse (so no special buttons are enabled) and it worked.

Got rid of virus thingy, checked, virus is gone. Now it's winlogon.exe in the proccesses which is an actual system application. Well geuss what, I still get this goddamn error. (- -);

I've done the msconfig thing and unchecked everything for the startup. All that did was make my computer run a bit faster. This is irritating. It did this a long time ago for about a week but restarting the computer always let me play. After about a week it stopped. -.-

I've done EVERYTHING. I've run a spyware scan, virus scan, checked the files for corruption, msconfig, nothing. Still getting this error. And I just keep getting the same, useless GM everytime I send a call in. All he says is "I'm sorry, I've already told you how to fix your problem." *click*

I'm two sticks away from ripping all my hair out and beating the computer to death with a bat, yes death (even inanimate objects can die >.>)

Nobody knows anything about this error, nobody can tell me anything, all my friends are having fun and have already pretty much forgotten about me. Nobody can help me and I'm pissed off as fuck.

I just tried to reinstall my game, I got as far as installing Rise of the Zilart, or try rather. Kept getting errors. So I just overlapped the files with the backup copy I made of FFXI with all the updates. Launched POL, it went about installing the files, hit Play, the screen goes black. I wait in anticipation for the popup about accepting the user agreement and instead, my mouse appears, then it kicks me back to fucking pol and I get the goddamn error, AGAIN. So this leads me to believe had I actually been able to install the game again, then re-downloaded all the updates (which would've taken 24+ hours on my 56k) would've done nothing but waste my time.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!! I'M GOING CRAZY!!!!!

I actually got help in the POL chatroom dedicated to people who hate that update error. I changed screen resolution to 800x600, it was set higher. I don't know how it works, why it works, it just does. I'm not counting on it lasting forever though, I hope it doesn't decide to break down again. ; ;

Problem Fixed

I had the same problem and was able to fix the problem, with no help from the GM's.

Look for for file "polcfg" (Found in the default folder
C://Program files/Playonline/SquareEnix/PlayonlineViewer/polcfg/, click on it and uncheck "Run in Windows Mode".

Now it should work.

I did the update and changed it back to "Run in Windows Mode" and it works now after you the update patch.
