  • Connecting to FFXI (Error 3113?)

I am unable to get connected to FFXI.

I log into PoL just fine. I choose FFXI from the games menu. The screen goes to full, I see the intro movie. I then get the message not to forsake my life because of the game. The game then tries to setup the connection to FFXI. But...

I keep getting stuck on "Setting up Connection" (or something like that). It sits there for a while (doing nothing), then I finally get a "Protocol time out" (I think that is what it said).

    Can anyone help me?

I actually got connected once last Saturday (Nov 1). Nothing changed! (that I know of) But, the next day I tried to connect again and the problem was back...

    Any ideas?

I only got to play the game for one day... and now I really miss it.

    No one has any ideas?

My computer is more than robust enough to run the game, but it is running "Windows ME".

Is anyone else having problems with "Windows ME"?

From what I have read Windows ME and 98 are the operating systems having this problem.

Several people have found solutions, but not all solutions work for everybody. I still can't get in, and it has been over two weeks since I bought the game!

Has anyone else had this problem with a different operating system?

There isn't enough detail about the error and error message. As far as you say though it sounds like one or more of the TCP and UDP ports that are need are not open.

This may be a result from your ISP doing their own form of trying to protect their customers by closing the needed ports on their end or if you are using any form of firewall, proxy, or router you'll want to make sure the ports needed are completly open.

That is what I thought (about the ports).

I have a router and a firewall. I removed both, but the problem persisted. I have done everything I know to make sure the proper ports are open, but nothing has worked.

Half of my free subscription is gone...
I have practically given up on this... :dead:

I am getting XP this weekend, I will post if that resolves my issue or not.

Still need more detail removing the router usually isn't the most rational action. Reason is because ISPs like cable records the MAC address of the device it's connected to, so changing the device or removing it will result in a conflict cause the MAC address isn't right.

That'll result in the ISP not letting you access to the internet untill the MAC address is matching what they have. If your router was cloning your computers MAC Address then that isn't a problem, but if it wasn't then you definatly can't get Internet access by removing it..

Try removing the firewall and look for a DMA or Port Forwarding option in the router. Set the DMA/Port Forwarding to send any incoming TCP/UDP ports that FFXI uses straight to your computer (Using the IP address the computer is set as on the network).

Thank you for your response Macht, but I have tried this already.

I removed my router and connected to the internet to verify access. (Still couldn't connect to FFXI.)

I removed my firewall and have have the specified range of ports (both TCP and UDP) forwarded to my computer. (Still couldn't connect to FFXI.)

I also tried the combination of no router and no firewall. (Still couldn't connect to FFXI, even after verifying connection with the internet.)

Is there some setting in the operating system that deals with ports that I am unaware of? (Windows ME)

I have reinstalled my network drivers, removed and replaced Microsoft client, and nothing has worked.

                I am out of ideas.

Thanks for your help Macht, what more information can I provide?

Everything works fine, untill I try to connect to FFXI. It gets stuck on "Setting up connecting" with the progress bar about 2/3 full.

I can watch the opening movie. After I accept the rules of play (or whatever that message is), it tries to connect, but it errors instead.

After it sits there for a long while it finally gets the "FFXI-3113: Protocol time out error."

I finally got it to work!

It works on my XP machine.

I will I could get it to work on the ME one, but "oh well".

Re: Connecting to FFXI (Error 3113?)

I am having the same error again as well. Can you elaborate how you fixed it?

Ironically, I too am on ME... I have also tried A LOT of things with ZERO success (port fowarding on 2 different routers, for example...)
