Re: FFXI on external HHD
Aside from Mhurron, I appreciate the responses.
Some people would rather throw around terms like MCSE (acting like they know what they're talking about) and try to make you sound like someone who is in the field who doesn't know what they're doing, so yea Mhurron, that's directed towards you. If you cannot even concieve the fact that people ask questions to get answers, then you are the foolish one.
I guess nobody has taken a vanilla install of xp w/ ffxi and booted externally(via firewire/usb) with success?***************************************

Re: FFXI on external HHD
I don't believe anyone makes/sells a hard drive that can be booted externally. I could be wrong, never researched this one. Try googling booting from an external hard drive and see what comes up."All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness." - Mark Kennedy

Re: FFXI on external HHD
I'm almost certain you can now since my bios gives me the option to boot from a USB stick. I can't imagine they would leave it at that, but who knows.Burning questions are burning: Is jenova_9 really a girl and is she cute? Does she talk like that in real life?

Re: FFXI on external HHD
We've been able to boot from a CD for quite a while, but I don't think I ever heard of anyone booting a Window's operating system from CD. That may not be a fair comparison, but I don't think it's completely irrelevant either. I guess the question is does Window's have an OS that can boot externally? How fast does the connection and drive have to be to work properly? Is USB 2.0 fast enough? A lot of questions that I am too lazy to google since this is not something I want to do."All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness." - Mark Kennedy

Re: FFXI on external HHD
I'll give you some background on why I ask and maybe you'll see why I keep asking this damn question
I have an external hard drive that I use to boot Linux. I can take a windows laptop, jump into BIOS and tell it to boot from USB, which launches my external usb drive w/ Linux. Most will now say "yea, but that's linux". Yes, I know, BUT with windows xp for example, you can actually take a hard drive out of a computer, and put it in a different computer and still boot from it. You may have to re-configure a few things like display adapters/network connections, but in simple setups the xp drivers are good enough for these to function w/o much finessing.
I ask the question because in a vanilla system where you are using basic drivers for your vga/ethernet/sound (by basic drivers I mean xp cd drivers), you should be able to boot your external drive w/ xp just as you would a linux drive, right? I will have to test this out and report my findings. That said, you would need another valid windows xp license to install, I get that. FFXI doesn't lock you out from installing it multiple hard drives (but I don't know the legalities of that), but as long as your expansions are legally registered I don't see the immediate problem. So, who thinks with a complete OS w/ ffxi on a bootable hard drive, can I make it work? wagers?

Re: FFXI on external HHD
Anyone who's spent any time in IT would realize most people who know what they're talking about get pissy when people don't know how to google it. The idea that Mhurron doesn't know what he's talking about is silly-- he's easily the most knowledgable IT guy on the forum. Some of us are nerds who can keep up with what he's talking about, but he's a professional who knows it.Originally posted by Zoltar View Post(acting like they know what they're talking about)
If you want to move an entire OS installation from computer to computer, that's an entirely different question from an app like FFXI. I've heard about (illegally) modified versions of Windows made to run on external drives, so maybe look that up if you get a kick from that sort of thing, but you're probably better off just running your favorite linux distro and WINE for all the stability and driver issues you're bound to have.Originally posted by Zoltar View PostMost will now say "yea, but that's linux". Yes, I know, BUT with windows xp for example, you can actually take a hard drive out of a computer, and put it in a different computer and still boot from it.
I could explain the problems inherit in running Windows as a portable OS, but I really don't see the point considering anyone who claims to be anything close to decent in IT should see them obviously.

Re: FFXI on external HHD
When you claim to be a pro at something, you probably shouldn't be asking questions related to the fundamental aspects of that thing. You essentially asked "How has windows worked since 95?" Then, surprisingly got irritated when you were called out.Originally posted by Zoltar View PostSome people would rather throw around terms like MCSE (acting like they know what they're talking about) and try to make you sound like someone who is in the field who doesn't know what they're doing, so yea Mhurron, that's directed towards you. Oh, and just incase you were wondering, MCSE in that context is meant as an insult. You have all the markings of a 'pro' who is a pro because of a 2 week boot camp.
You can go on and say what you will about me, what you say about me doesn't change anything, especially not what I do for a living, but in future learn a little something about what you claim to be a pro at.

Re: FFXI on external HHD
Can BartPE be booted and run from an external drive? If so could you not just install it on an external hard drive? Or is it just for optical drives?"All of the biggest technological inventions created by man - the airplane, the automobile, the computer - says little about his intelligence, but speaks volumes about his laziness." - Mark Kennedy

Re: FFXI on external HHD
Officially, XP Pro will not boot from removable hardware. There are posted howtos to alter what you need to alter to get around it. Because windows does classify USB removable drives differently then optical media, and BIOS's treat CD-ROMS differently then HDD, I doubt you could simply put BartPE on a USB drive and expect it to work.Originally posted by Solymir View PostCan BartPE be booted and run from an external drive? Re: FFXI on external HHD
Mhurron, you acted like a complete ass from the start, you try to sound enlightened with your witty, non-helpful answers and your buddy Feba who obviously is on for the ride just goes along w/ what you say.
You two are pretty sad individuals and set a bad example for people looking for help on this site. Both of you need a good /slap. Got a lot of nerve to question me and say 'you should know this, you should know that' when I'm simply looking for some answers (and don't assume you know my background) and give wise-ass remarks. Both of you have issues and I'll take my ffxi/other-related questions elsewhere.
take care ffxionline.

Never claimed to be a pro, but since I am an analyst you start acting jealous/mad/insulted? Self-conscious? Mhurron, you've got a hell of a lot to learn. I think until my last couple posts you actually understood what I was talking about.
What's your background Mhurron? I'd like to know since Feba obviously aspires to be you one day. I'll stop now because you obviously showed the rest of the posters here who's the big bad IT guy with all the knowledge, so don't ask dumb questions on this site lol

Re: FFXI on external HHD
Someone who calls themselves an IT analyst is calling themselves a IT professional. Professional is shortened to pro. You do call yourself an IT Pro, then proceeded to do the equivalent of a mechanic asking why he should ever have to change break pads.Originally posted by Zoltar View PostMhurron, you acted like a complete ass from the start ...
Never claimed to be a pro, but since I am an analyst ...
You announced yourself as an IT professional and then asked a stupid question, one you should have known already but at the very least should have been able to think through and figure out yourself (if you actually were that is). I treated you like I would any one else making the same claim and asking stupid questions, I treated you like you were an idiot.
I knew exactly what you were talking about, both before and after you changed what you were asking.Originally posted by Zoltar View PostI think until my last couple posts you actually understood what I was talking about

Re: FFXI on external HHD
Another self-proclaimed pro then, I'll have to assume.
lol
Sorry, I got a good laugh from your response and had to post another time. I think you're jealous of people who actually work in the IT field for a living and can support themselves from it. It's ok Mhurron, since you talk about MCSE's and bootcamps, it shouldn't surprise me that these are all you probably amounted to and never got past the big stuff...self-proclaimed IT wiz you are, congrats!
