Re: New Hackings Begin ... Security Token or Not.

I've no idea what your son does exactly or what his expertise may be. That said, if he knows his stuff, he should be able to analyze his set up and figure out the likely weaknesses in the system and make a pretty good gestimate on how his info was leaked.

Anyway, what is the disagreement? I'm skeptical at your claim that your son is a computer security expert, because I think the smart money is on his computer being compromised rather than SE's? You know what, if he says he's an expert on computer security, I'll believe it. How's that?

p.s. I used to work for a university's IT support as well. I'm pretty sure no one at where I worked could've detected any rootkit unless they happen to have a commercial security software capable of finding that particular infection. Knowledge of computer security at different universities vary wildly...

What is the common way people first see that they have been hacked? I just tried to log on and my saved password is incorrect.

That's probably all the warning you would get ... have you tried typing your password in again?

As I explained in another thread on this forum, the very suspicious thing that happened when he reported it was that they took care of it very quickly. If anyone has dealt with SE, they know how slow they are to fix issues like this so when my son was back in full swing within approx 2 days of reporting it....ya thats damn odd. The GM was just trading him stuff like crazy. He'd say "I had this." and boom he'd get a trade and the GM would give it to him. About the only thing he had a problem with was abjurations...the GM was only going to give him the abj and not the cursed piece. LOL So ya...damn strange that they were so accommodating. He thought he'd be out of the game at least a month. Makes you think that they knew there was an issue somewhere...
If he used token and still got hacked, 100% there is something on his pc. Or that he is using windower. From what I seen you can log on two unofficial windowers at the same time up to the player select screen. And you can't buy/cancel any ids, move servers without re entering a one time password. If he was hacked, you can't use the same one time password. And only the token he bought and registered can be used for client.

Other things- he might visited other ffxi related sites which all can possibley habors viruses/trojans. He has a FFXIAH account. It displays you like a grand opening for a Starbucks. Your equips, missions/quests, and rank all on display ripe for the hacking. Even lists your friends who might have the same amount of uber gear as you.

Does FFXIah still show gear via LS Community Profile??? Mine hasn't showed up in a long time for some reason.

That's ultra paranoia, anyway. There is no way for the RMT to see your gear on FFXIAH and know what your POL ID is and cherry pick your account to be hacked.

They sell accounts that are hacked, how is that paranoia? Most often they go after the accounts of people who stopped playing and don't even notice their characters where hijacked. Who's account that has been stolen is a low level? Have sh**ty equips? No one right. They are targeting people with millions worth of gear, 1- several 75 jobs.

Re: New Hackings Begin ... Security Token or Not.

It's paranoid because they have no way of hacking you just from knowing what your gear is. Correct me if I'm wrong, but getting hacked pretty much requires either getting malware or being stupid and giving out your own info. I'm no expert on the subject but it's not like they can magically commandeer your computer or account.

Might as well start getting paranoid that random people /checking you in Whitegate are RMTs scouting for their next victim.

Re: New Hackings Begin ... Security Token or Not.

They have no way to do that. You can not look at my account in game and know what my POL ID is, nor can the RMT. They will hack anything they can get their hands on. Even people's mule accounts have value on them. I have heard of plenty of peoples' mules getting hacked.

They very well may log onto a low level account and decide to leave it alone after checking it out, but they still have no means to determine what accounts to go into before they even get them, simply based on the user ID. Just a user name and password tells you nothing about who owns the account or what items it has on it.

Again, they have no way to actually target those people. Trojans and keyloggers do not discriminate. I guarantee if they get your account information, they will enter your account and decide for themselves if it is worth stripping.

                      There is a difference.

And for the record, plenty of people who quit sell their own accounts themselves.

No but how many stories of people up and warping during pts...really how do they know you have the ability on hand at the very moment? People are making it seem that someone is up and mysteriously hacking your account. Everyone wants to play the "I don't got any pc bugs", "I don't use windower","I don't buy gil" line. So magically your account gets hacked. Like I already said they are targeting people with 75's, missions/quests dones and gears out the rear end.

FFXIAH isn't official site, no other sites other then the one's SE makes are. Ever read the forums on FFXAH, lot's of people openly admit to being RMT there.People should be aware about what information they put out.Call that paranoia oh well. Better to be safe then sorry.

So, have they found out what program(s) RMTs are using this time to get access to people's accounts?

From the threads on BG, so far, they haven't figured out what it is or where to find it. At this point, people are just recommending a reformat.

So they could be using some sort of exploit that simply changes the file(s) that specify the address POL connects to without leaving any active programs after that?

Because I don't remember any trojans taking so long to be found.
