Help Us Help You! PlayOnline User PC Survey (06/17/2008)



A survey regarding PC specs and internet connections for PlayOnline customers using Windows PCs was put online today.

Survey period:
June 17, 2008 (Tuesday), 3:00 (PDT) – June 30, 2008 (Monday), 2:00 (PDT)

The survey's results will be used for the future improvement of PlayOnline's services.

We ask that you fill out the survey here.

perhaps but it might require some recoding of the game to upgrade the core areas...are they really gonna verion it?

The thing that makes the least sense about this is they could've just polled ACTUAL user data from POL (update the client if you have to) and gotten things far more accurate.

That wouldn't get answers to all the questions they're asking, a web survey is a lot easier to code, and nobody gets to bitch about SE spying on their PC.

The thing that makes the least sense about this is they could've just polled ACTUAL user data from POL (update the client if you have to) and gotten things far more accurate.

POL has no idea what your network connection to the outside world is, unless you have dial-up. They also seem to want to know a little bit about the tech savvy of their users.

Seems a little odd that choosing consoles you own is supposedly required when as a PC user, you wouldn't necessarily have one just to be an FFXI player...

Also seems a little odd that they provided fewer aspect ratios for the monitor in the survey than they have in the game itself. Had to put down 16:9 even though I'm on 16:10 (which seems to be more common among widescreen computer monitors anyway...)

And as usual I ended up having to put down Other for a lot. At least they recognize some of us build our own desktop computers. Routers, on the other hand... I have a hard time explaining even to ISP tech support that yes, I have a router, no it doesn't need to be unplugged, no, there aren't any stray settings I'm not aware of, yes, I know how it works, I BUILT IT!! Forget explaining how it's not just a router, but fulfilling other roles as well. (Of course, it's extremely hard to find anyone in ISP tech support who seems to understand basic networking concepts and terminology, sadly. I usually can't find out whether a connection is suitable to my needs until after I've signed up and started trying to use it...)

Still, at least they'll know there are a few of us still running Windows 2000.

POL has no idea what your network connection to the outside world is, unless you have dial-up.

Well, I meant combined with a user survey. Have the client find out whatever it can about the machine, and have the human player fill in the rest.

Except if it's actually a required field, you'd have to check something. Even if it's just Other. Perhaps they don't care about the difference between Other/None. Still doesn't mean that someone who was pushed out of PC spec would even consider moving to a console version. Especially on PS2, where you're talking about tracking down a hard drive, a bunch of install discs, and a network adapter. They may have released Vana'diel Collection 2008 for PS2, but that doesn't come with a hard drive.

if they really wanted to find out what systems someone WOULD be able to play on, they should've asked that specifically. I mean, I used the Windows client, and I'm still technically CAPABLE of using that, but until it works on Wine (either through SE helping, or someone at Wine pushing to get it working) I'm very unlikely to. I OWN a PS2 as well, but I sure as hell wouldn't bother with the PS2 version of the game. I'm considering a PS3, and I probably wouldn't take anything short of a PS3 port (not for a graphics update, but just for things like resolution and additional power). I own a Wii, but I would almost certainly not consider using FFXI on that, even if they found a way around storage limitations.

I don't see what is odd about this business-like question in a survey from SE. They do this stuff as a part of deciding thier market strategy. No matter how special PC users think they are, the console market is dominant and SE wants to know where to go to make thier games accordingly.

It seems more like marketing adjustments than anything. I doubt this will have any impact on the game itself.

What?

It has little to do with Final Fantasy. They hardly even reference it other than asking if you play it. It seems more built around POL and SE than anything.

Otherwise yeah... I honestly can't ever recall seeing a FFXI ad anywhere.
