  • My PS2 died.....will a new PS3 work?

Much to my dismay, the hard drive on my PS2 has died. So the next thing I do is price the PS3 models. In my search Bestbuy informed me that the 60GB and the 80GB models have been discontinued. As I research the 40GB model I see from past reviews on it that it has had problems in the past playing PS2 games, but with a hardware update this has been resolved? The question I would be asking would be if the 40GB model now being sold will play FF titles (specifically 7,8,10, & 10-2). If it still has problems with these my decision may be swayed towards the XBOX for the better performance and just pick up a used PS2 slim for cheap. On a look toward the future, does anyone know if FFXIII will be on any platform besides the PS3?

Go for the 360. Go to a gamestop trade in all your PS2 stuff and jump into something new. There's less questions you have to ask yourself and others. Also you won't be able to play FFXI on a PS2 slim. It requires the HDD and the slim has no expansion bay unless you jimmy-rig it to. PS3 from what I've seen now PS3s hardly have any problems with backwards compatability. Tried and tested over at a Game Stop.

Easy Route: trade in all your PS2 gear and games (they won't take the HDD) get a xbox360.

long road: debate for weeks over a PS3 and its componets and compatibility.

    its all up to you.

      Re: My PS2 died.....will a new PS3 work?

I would just dump the whole playstation idea if I didn't want to play the older FF titles, but my wife and I still like to play FFVIII and FFX from time to time. Also if FFXIII is PS3 only I WILL buy a PS3. So as you can see the dedication to ff and the fact that I still play titles that were Playstaion only. So the question still stands....buy a XBOX 360 for FFXI and a used PS2 slim for the older stuff or just go out for the PS3 and be done.

Thanks for confirming the backwards compatability though.

The 80 GB is supposed to have limited compatibility I believe.

However, rumor has it Sony is working on yet another model, this one 120 GB and it will have backwards compatibility.

Well I am going to buy one this weekend so I'll proly go with the PS3 for when FF13 comes out in December. Now the only thing I wish had happened already would be the update to put the macros on server >.<

yeah if you want Hardware emulation(for PS2) games the only models that do that are the 20 and the 60(why I bought my 60 when I did).

The 80 uses software emulation which is less likey to work with PS2 titles.

The 40 is only backwards compatable with PS1 games...not PS2 games!

Well lets hope the newer 40GB works for PS2 games, all others have been discontinued. None of the stores around me had back stock or would order one other than the 40GB.

Check out pawn shops for 60GB versions. I know a few around my area took in any and all PS3s they could get exspecially the ones being discontinued. If you check out some homebrew sites I bet they'll have something to add if you're tech savvy.

                    Re: My PS2 died.....will a new PS3 work?

I just got back from Best Buy with my XBOX 360.... There are several issues with FFXI and the PS3...all versions. If you have the 2008 collection you have to somehow get POL installed before it will read the collection disk, and this is if you do not have a 40GB version and download the emulator from the Playstation web site.

Since all but the 40GB version is discontinued, I am having deja vu from when the PS2 went slim. Instead of going through the pains of hunting down a PS3 that "Might" be compatible Sony will just loose out on my monies. And I was so hoping my PSP could have a wifi buddy to talk to. >.<

With this misadventure I come to wonder if Sony and Square just stop talking to each other when they get tired of playing together.

The PS3 issue with the collection was solved in the 2.10 firmware update(for PS3)...but I see you made your choice ^^

Me? I don't trust Microsoft and the red ring of death issue was a big sticking point for me and the main reason I won't buy a 360. If you can trust Wikipedia the original systems had up to a 1/3 failure rate...which is dead nasty! It still happens to users to this day although maybe not as much but I like my game consoles to last...

The xbox360 has the most issues of any console in history according to reports I've read. Not only that, I've read several forums with people playing FFXI just fine on their PS3 80gb version. That and FFXIII is exclusively a PS3 title and that is enough for me lol
